Predict our record

Post#1 » by Wilford Brimley » Wed Aug 28, 2013 5:28 pm

Now that the team is starting to take shape, how many wins do you think we will get?

I have to say, I see no way we don't start 1-4 or 2-3 (wins vs DET, maybe WAS) with our schedule.

REGULAR SEASON

AT 49ers
Redskins
AT Bengals
BYE
Lions
AT Ravens
Browns
AT Vikings
Bears
Eagles
AT Giants
Vikings
AT Lions
Falcons
AT Cowboys
Steelers
AT Bears

10-6. Will lose to SF in playoffs due to defense still blowing chunks against good offenses and secondary being afraid to tackle

Defense will be much improved over last year. Lets also remember they were 11th in yards against and 11th in points against. They played terrible against the read option vs. SF, no doubt about it, but the cliches about toughness are far overdone.

This year, our corner depth is as good as any in the NFL, and our front 7 is deeper and healthier than last season. We're basically adding Jones, Neal, Perry, and Jolly (not to mention an improved Daniels) to the front 7 we ended last year with.

Also, how do you start a topic but then not make a prediction on record?

I'm surprised he didn't predict 0-16 with how awful of a GM Ted Thompson is.

The analytic crowd likes Green Bay quite a bit in large part because of injuries. The Packers were historically successful last season, given the number of games lost to injury.

I have a hard time pencilling in more than ten wins this season and it's because of the schedule. I think it's pretty brutal, and I absolutely hate the early season bye. My guess:

@49ers
Redskins
@Bengals

BYE
Lions
@Ravens
Browns
@Vikings
Bears
Eagles

@Giants
Vikings
@Lions
Falcons
@Cowboys

Steelers
@Bears

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/scramb ... overunders

GREEN BAY PACKERS (10.5)
Tom: The Packers went 11-5 last year with no particularly good running backs, a boatload of injuries on both sides of the ball, and a defense that was worse on third down than it was on second down. Why is this line only 10.5? I know, they had only 10.5 Pythagorean wins, but they had at least 12 the previous three seasons and we had them with 11.8 Expected Wins last year. FOA 2013 has them with 10.4 wins, but only because all our win projections are compressed toward 8-8.

Mike: That sounds like an excuse

Tom: Well, sort of, maybe. ...In other words, yes.

Mike: That said, the Packers' hideous defensive performance of 2011 seems to be something of an aberration.

Tom: Teams can have a down year. The Bears and Steelers both mixed a down year into their otherwise extended runs of defensive excellence.

Mike: I'm still suspicious about the linebacking corps, which is very ordinary. And the secondary is very good at everything except shutting down the opposing No. 1 receiver.

Tom: Can I see a great passer exploiting the middle of the field the way Kurt Warner did in the 2009 postseason? Sure, but this isn't the Lions.

Mike: Which means, both within the division and against the league writ large, that it's pretty close to useless. That's how you end up with a disconnect between DVOA and perception. Who will win? It doesn't matter, the offense is terrifying and the defense is, at worst, average. Over.

Tom: I think a healthy Tramon Williams is the sort of top corner they need. He wasn't healthy last year. He hasn't played this year. Like the Texans and Ed Reed, the time they'll need him most is December and January. Even without him, they're winning the division. Over.

Yeah, it is definitely in the realm of possibility because we have some tough opponents, but you've got a silly outlook on this thing. Why the hell is Baltimore impossible to beat? Or at Cincy? The only game we don't have a 50% chance of winning (or better) is @San Francisco.

Wilford, I'd love to make a sidebet with you on how things will go all over the NFL. You seem to be judging how things will play out in the regular season simply out of a suspicion that physical teams are good because of the small sample 2012 playoffs. Or that the Ravens are unbeatable, thanks to Raheem Moore.

Care to make some bets?

11-5, though I think the talent level is closer to 13-3 but our schedule is brutal.

Why can't we beat the Bengals/Redskins again?

Im down for a bet, not sure what the parameters would be, though.

I don't think were a "bad" team. If I were to give us a letter grade, I'd say solid B. I just think our deficiencies on D and especially the Oline will be our downfall vs A teams.

Redskins - read option, underrated front 7
Bengals - crazy good dline

That's reasons why the games will be tough, not why we can't beat them. The Lions have a good D-line too and we don't seem to have too many issues there.

As for the Redskins, we don't even know if RG3 will play and if he does he's not going to have gotten a snap in preseason. Their defense is nothing special, even with Orakpo coming back.

You seriously think we'll lose to the Steelers at home? The Steelers are not going to be your typical Steelers team. I have a friend who is the biggest Steeler homer ever. He pretty much thinks they're going to the Super Bowl every year. Even before Bell went down with his foot injury he was telling me how terrible they are going to be this year. Their OL is BAD, they don't have great receivers, and their running back situation is about as bad as it has been in 15+ years. Then add in the fact their defense has been eroding ever since we met them in the Super Bowl. I just don't see how we'd lose to them at home.

I think we beat the Ravens too. This actually isn't too bad of a year to play the AFC North. Regarding the division, I think we sweep the Lions and Vikings and split with the Bears.

Call it one of those losses that you don't see coming. Everyone had the Packers beating the Colts last season.
