Odd man out at WR... Bennett?

Post#1 » by BullHeaded » Wed Aug 28, 2013 7:47 pm

According to this tweet by Zach Zaidman, the Bears had been trying to trade Earl Bennett.
https://twitter.com/ZachZaidman/status/ ... 4878151681

I've been wondering about the WR's we're keeping, especially with Hester as a full time returner. Before reading this, I thought we'd be keeping two out of three of Wilson, Weems and Anderson. I didn't think we'd be serious about parting with Earl Bennett. But maybe the Bears want to keep all three? If not... who are your keepers? I'd like to see us retain Wilson and Anderson. They've both showed up so much this preseason and training camp. I think in the pre-season game against the Raiders, Wilson sealed it for me when he took that shot catching the ball in traffic. I think he has the most upside of the three (or four if you include Bennett). If we're keeping Michael Ford who can handle returns in a pinch... I don't think Weems is quite as valuable. Thoughts?

Here's an nfl article on it.

Don't really see the need here. Its not like we are loaded at wide receiver or anything.

I doubt you get anything of real value for him with him always being hurt.

He'll probably get cut. He misses too many games because of injury and is pretty much a smaller, less talented version of Jeffrey, yet gets paid more. If Wilson and Anderson can contribute as the third and fourth receivers then I have no problem with getting rid of Bennett.

It would be nice if we could get a draft pick for him but I just don't see it happening. Hopefully next year we can draft a real speed receiver somewhere in the middle rounds to be a viable deep threat.

Let's be real... we're not going to get anyone to trade for him. He makes a lot of money for what he offers. I could see us possibly cutting him though if we're feeling better about Wilson, Anderson and Weems. Maybe? I'm sure Jay Cutler is a consideration as well. He likes EB and has a rapport with him.

Weems
Why to keep: Can return kicks/special teams
Why to cut: Can't add to practice squad, not as much upside

Wilson
Why to keep: Upside! May be hard to hide on PS
Why to cut: Eligible for PS

Bennett
Why to keep: Cutler rapport, good hands
Why to cut: $$$, injured, limited upside

Anderson
Why to keep: Great camp, upside
Why to cut: PS eligible? May be easier to hide from other teams

Is this about right?

I think EB is good when he plays, but the problem is that he's always hurt. And last year not only did Tice do a crap job involving him in the offense (Not to mention Tice was crap in general), but also he was hurt yet again.

I'd rather have Bennett than rely on Weems...

I think the key is that they're not letting Bennett go unless they are confident one or both of Anderson and Wilson will fill in well.

Nobody wants to rely on Weems as a third receiver, especially because he is a four phase special teamer.

Wilson won't pass waivers..he's technically not PS eligible.

hes due to make 2.5 million this year as a Bear. That money would be nice to convert to DT. Bears are gonna become thin there I just know it.

Wilson wouldn't even make it past waivers onto our practice squad, I see this as the only way the Bears keep Wilson. Which is to say, a smart move IMO. He(Bennett) doesn't have any guaranteed money this season and Wilson has enough to stay on the roster and possibly show up on game day actives if injuries happen.

As for Bennett, he is never healthy. Ever.....good player and he has always had a great rapport with Cutler but he has to be healthy.

I think we go with 6 receivers. Weems being #6.
I think an EB trade at the end of the season for a low pick. Or he's released. We got a 6th rounder for bust out Gabe Carimi. So I say a 5 1/2 rounder lol.

I hope not...Hope Bennett can find a way to stay healthy for 16 games this season...He and Cutler are amazing together.

Cliff Levingston is hearing that Earl is having trouble picking up the offense as well. The concussion doesn't help when you miss reps, but remember, he didn't really play as a rookie because he couldn't get the playbook down. Then you have last year where when he wasn't hurt, he was pretty invisible perhaps due in part to not being able to pick up the offense.

Earl's career high in games played, targets, receptions and yards came in 2009. His career high in TDs was 2010 with 3. We're not talking about a guy who's been prolific here. Losing him really wouldn't be a big deal. Marshall, Jeffery, Martellus and Forte are all far more important.

I think two things are going to factor into us only carrying five receivers:

1. Devin Hester being strictly a return specialist. That is one roster spot soaked up by a player who does nothing on offense or defense.

2. The Matt Blanchard injury is going to force us to carry 3 qbs instead of 2. If Blanchard was healthy, he'd be cut and then signed to the practice squad with little threat of another team signing him to their big boy roster. It was a great way to have a number 3 while preserving a roster spot. With him injured we're being forced to use a veteran who won't be eligible for the practice squad as our no. 3.

earl has jay cutler's trust.

if healthy, earl can be a very good receiver for this team.

“The Earl Bennett situation right now is significant, and Marquess is next in line,” Trestman said.

That sounds serious for Bennett. Trestman isn't your normal football coach. He knows vocabulary. He wouldn't use that word unless it had purpose to it.

So where does that leave Joe Anderson? I think he is above Wilson. So if Anderson is above Bennet then bye-bye Earl cuz he makes to many millions to be behind Anderson.
