Go to guy?

Post#1 » by dVs33 » Thu Aug 29, 2013 5:55 am

With all the new additions, Joe has added some guys that can put up some big numbers, but when i look at the roster i wonder who would be our "go to guy".
Both Smith and Jennings are known for having questionable shot selections but are both very talented in their own right. Drummond has all the potential in the world, but creating his own offense is still going to be an issue. Billips is going to see minutes in crunch time, but does he have enough in the tank to put the team on his back when needed? Monroe is very polished down low and has a strong passing game, but is his developing jumpshot at a high enough level to justify him being the main option on offense?
do we even need a "go to guy"?

Personally i'm leaning to Monroe.

Who do you guys think it'll be?

This is the primary issue that I could see limiting our win potential this year -- no "go to" guy. Looks like Jennings by default to me, given that he starts with the ball in his hands, and it's already been shown he's not a real "go to" kind of scorer 95% of the time.

Team ball has its strengths and its weaknesses, after all.

Honestly, I don't trust Monroe enough yet to be our go to guy. The same to Jennings. The difference is Jennings can really shoot the ball. I think he's going to be the go to guy as far buzzer beater shots go. However, I think he has a lot more to develop as far as maturity and mentality goes. It could even be KCP for all we know. I think we have the talent to get one. They just need to step up.

It's probably Jennings seeing as how he's the only one who can create his own shot while also being able to make tough shots (no, Smith cannot do the same). I highly doubt Smith can close games well, especially with all the great long defending SFs in the league. Monroe can't go Dirk on anyone and his FT percentage makes him a shaky option at best, and Drummond is completely out of the option. Jennings will be the go-to guy for this season. Now being the default go-to guy is much different than being a good go-to guy, and that's definetely a problem that this team faces.

I'd love for it to be Moose, but based on past performance he tends to get tight late in close games, plays better at the beginning. So for now I'd want Jennings with the ball in crunch time when we need a basket. He's our best scorer, and with all the talent around him drawing attention, he should have an easy time creating a good shot. I say have Jennings set everyone else up to start games, and then take over at the end like Chauncey used to do. The great thing is we really multiple guys who can score when needed so it can really just be whoever is hot that night.

It will be between Jennings and Monroe. Jennings obviously isnt scared to take big (and often terrible) shots an Monroe looked solid when we went to him in the post in close situations.

Im not worried about our go-to guy, are options this season are considerably better than they were last season.

The hot hand can be our go to guy or whoever has the mismatch for the night.

I couldn't have said it better myself. We have a good overall team, nobody will be our go-to-guy.

Jennings or Smith spotting up from 20 feet with 12 seconds left on the shot clock.

Go-to guy for a buzzer beater? Either Jennings or Will Bynum from 5 feet behind the three point line.

It's very difficult for a bigman to be your go to guy. This looks like Jennings by default, but you can probably expect more of the "by committee" approach that we saw with our GTW squad.

Exactly. Especially for Monroe, because he's not very athletic and prone to being blocked at the end of games when the paint clogs up, added to the fact that the refs swallow their whistles at the end of games...

20 seconds left, tied game in the 4th quarter...I'm running a P&R with Jennings and Monroe, with a pick post option if we can't get a shot off the pick.

If I were the coach, Chauncey would have taken the winning shot, yet I think Jennings will not subject to my arrange.

Am I the only one who remembers all the times Chauncey tried to get a whistle instead of trying to make the shot? Rip coming off a curl was usually a better play for us and it always baffled me that what we'd actually get was Billups trying to draw contact or Sheed jacking a 3. :sigh:

The way the team is built it will clearly be Jennings. For any type of real success this year, Jennings has to play near all-star level. I would think 18 and 8 is what I need to expect out of him. Monroe is probably my second option right night.

They need to come up with an unstoppable play... as they're coming down the court set a stagger pick for Dre... lob city... he can add to Brandon Knight's portfolio

Nope, I remember that too. I'm hoping the end of game plan is to try and get a decent shot up with the big front line in for the followup of a miss. Seems like there would be a fair number of second chance opportunities. That would seem to be playing to your strengths. I don't see that the Pistons have an overwhelmingly superior scorer that you would want to run isolation for in that situation.
