You never want to have to waive a player of this caliber. Mostly because you never want to have a player of this caliber in the first place.

This is a pretty shrewd move if as expected he is claimed off of waivers by another team. The Grizz would then get to keep the reported 1.6 million in cash they received in the deal to acquire him.

If he is not claimed off of waivers by another team, the Grizz can then use the stretch provision and spread his salary over three equal payments for three seasons. The cap hit will therefore just be a shade over three hundred thousand per season.

Philly, Lakers, and one other team need to acquire an additional player to comply with NBA rules.

WTF why didn't they just hold on to Donte Green?

Donte Greene's $1 million contract for this season is non-guaranteed

I read Melo tweeting about Memphis and how he liked it and was excited. This is another Grizzlies PR suicide for anyone following the team and supporting them and season ticket holders. A very long history of moves like this since we traded Pau Gasol. Frankly, why bother?

Had Melo been claimed, it would have meant we'd be at around $67.7 million, or around $4 million under the tax. Didn't happen so we still stand only around $2.7 million under. I think it was worth a shot that someone might claim Melo, and we basically would have gotten $1.6 mil for free. We need another scorer/shooter, and that costs money, so we have to try to get further under the tax.

But I think there are a number of ways we can clear more without a trade.

First, Akognon and Willie Reed are non-guaranteed. That means we can clear about $1.58 million instantly. That brings us to about $4.28 million in tax room.

Dark-child mentioned the stretch provision. Using it on Melo would instantly cut about $900k, bringing us to around $5.18 million in room. This is close to enough to bring in a decent shooter who isn't completely one-dimensional.

But another option would be to use the stretch provision on Tayshaun Prince, rather than give up assets to move him. We can take his cap hit down to $3 million per year for the next 5 if he agrees to it, which would give us around $8.52 million in tax room. This is more than enough to acquire the type of player we need, and we still have decent assets like Ed Davis, Jamaal Franklin, and Jerryd Bayless, and the $7.5 million TPE to get it done.
