Matt Ryan signs 5yr Extension ($103.75 million)

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Thu Jul 25, 2013 8:10 pm

Falcons signed QB Matt Ryan to a five-year, $103.75 million extension through 2018.
It's essentially a six-year, $113.75 million deal if we factor in Ryan's $10 million salary for 2013. Per Profootballtalk's Mike Florio, Ryan will receive $63 million over the first three years -- $1 million more than Joe Flacco. Ryan also gets $59 million guaranteed. It locks him in through 2018, his age-33 season. Although Ryan lacks elite arm talent and sometimes struggles with bodies around him in the pocket, he's entrenched as a franchise quarterback and top 10-12 NFL passer. Ryan, 28, led the NFL in completion rate (68.6 percent) in 2012 and set a career-best by ranking seventh in fantasy QB scoring.

Right move for the Falcons. Matt Ryan is a top 10 QB knocking at the door of elite. He needs some more playoff wins to truly validate the contract though.

He shouldn't have gotten the deal until he got those playoff wins. I'm not saying Joe Flacco deserved the deal he just got, but it certainly made more sense than this one.

Worth every penny. The playoff wins will come, I mean he did just win one last year. Peyton Manning took a long time before he started winning in the postseason too.

I'm not sure if Matt Ryan is worth every penny.

As a Falcons fan and season ticketholder, I continue to be concerned about the Falcons defense, because it's going to hold the team back from the success they desire.

this dude sucks balls. overrated. barely got by last year. before that zero. so basically a playoff win vs. the seahawks equates to 100 mil.

He is worthy

Manning, Brees and Brady are old, and will be done in a few years, who is behind them, Rodgers is the best in the game and then... Ryan, no doubt.

Eli is there but he's already 32.

Griffin, Luck, Wilson, Cam maybe can surpass him, but right now, it is what it is.

Good job by the Falcons to re-sign him, he's a top 5-6 QB in the game right now and will get the play-off wins to validate the contract in due time.

That's a stretch. I'd take the Manning brothers, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, and Kaepernick over him.

You're overrating Kaepernick because of a good play-off run, I wouldn't put him in a conversation with the others mentioned. I'm also skeptical of Eli after an underwhelming season last year. I agree that Rodgers, Peyton, Brees, and Brady are ahead though.

For me a players ranking is a combination of two factors: individual stats and winning (most notably postseason wins). At the end of the day Eli has two SuperBowl rings and Kaep has more playoffs wins than MR in one year alone. I hate to sound like a broken record, but until MR makes noise in the postseason he's not going to be any higher than 7th or 8th, and that's being generous.

I really don't think it's fair to give Ryan a low ranking strictly because of a lack of playoff wins, especially since Ryan did everything he could in the NFC Championship game vs. San Fran. One thing Eli, Kaep, and Flacco have in common is that their teams all had stellar defenses, the Falcons' defense was poor this year and throughout the Matt Ryan era. Ryan threw for over 400 yards and 3 TDs in the championship game but the Defense collapsed; so you're telling me that if the Defense doesn't collapse Ryan goes from 8th to top 5 on a ranking list? That's completely out of his control. But even looking at playoff wins, I don't think Eli is better than Ryan just because of PAST championships, in a way that's living in the past; Ryan was much better than Eli this season and actually made the playoffs, heck even the match between the Giants and Falcons this season saw Ryan severely outplay Eli in a 34-0 win. As for Kaep, like I said, he did impress in these playoffs but that's not enough for me to put him into the top 5 or ahead of Ryan, if you give Ryan San Fran's defense then he'd win the sb.

Exactly. You have to open up the wallet to keep a very good QB(even if he's not elite, though I think he is). The alternative is you end up getting stuck with a Rex Grossman or Mark Sanchez type QB.

The Falcons are a legit Super Bowl contender, and that's largely because of Matty Ice. Lose him and that goes down the toilet.

Falcons didn't really have a choice here, but they did what they had to do. But until he can win in the playoffs, I still don't know I can say he's worth every penny.

Just wait until Kaepernick and Wilson get their extensions next summer. Ryan will seem like chump change.

Who needs Matt Ryan? Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland know they way you build a champion is by drafting a Left Tackle #1 overall.....then not re-signing him when his contract is up...

i'm a falcon fan
i think ryan does deserve the money because he has been delivering, especially his record in games decided by less than one td

he doesn't play defense so i don't see how that factors into his contract unless you're just worried about the cap in general. matt ryan is too good and you have to lock him down because his skillset is extremely rare rather than trying to save a few dollars to get a marginally better defense.

It is a good contract, not only for football reasons, but Matty has shown he can be the ultimate teammate, leader, face of the franchise, and face of the league, like Chipper was for the Braves and MLB.

He is a guy that not only has the skill set to be super productive for the next ten years, even with age, but he is a guy you don't have to worry about getting arrested by the Feds, or saying something dumb to a reporter.

Matty has already been getting the number, the playoff wins will come. nobody realizes that Montana, Aikman, Brady, and Manning all had great defenses they years they won the Super Bowl, Ryan has never had that.
