This sounds worse than Orlando trading Howard for Afflalo... That would a heist by Houston.

Orlando traded one year of Howard for three or four first-round picks, Mo Harkless, and Nik Vucevic (second in the league in total rebounds and RPG last year). Afflalo's and Harrington's contracts were mostly there to make the deal work.

But yeah, this would be an easy win for Houston. They weren't really that good last year, and they get to trade their fourth and sixth best players for another team's best and another team's second or third best.

Parsons was clearly the 2nd option on one of the best offenses in the league last year, his defense is pretty good with the potential to be very good if he stops playing the lanes(coaching). I'm not going to sit here and try to argue with you guys that he's better than Monroe but he does fit what this team needs more than Moose does. He's locked up for the next 2 years at less than $2 million, possibly giving us an extra $13 million in cap space next summer, close to $16 million total.

You don't trade Monroe for a lesser player just because he's a better fit on paper. Parsons is a fine young role player that Id love to have, but certainly not at the expense of Monroe. Smith/Monroe/Drummond is our frontcourt going forward. What we need is a backup 2/3 that can hit the jumper and play D because Smith will likely only play 16 minutes at SF, which leaves 32 for a backup.

That's a short list, and I don't think Parsons is on it when you have Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Batum, mkg, Barnes out there.

I see what your point, but it's really misleading to call Parsons 'the clear second option' on the Rockets. He was hardly an 'option' at all--he didn't initiate almost any plays, and he was actually 12th on the team in usage %. Harden used almost twice as many possessions as him, while the other useful offensive players on the Rockets--Lin, Motiejunas, Patrick Patterson, Delfino, Toney Douglas, etc--all used more plays per minutes. He barely used more possessions per minute than Asik, whose offensive skillset is limited to dunking and bricking free throws.

That's a good point about next year's cap space though. Parsons would likely get paid big season after next, but getting out from under Monroe's $10m cap hold could be big. Still not enough to sweeten the deal though. (Finally I can't tell if you're just playing devil's advocate, sc8581, but you know Chandler Parsons isn't a great player, right? It's nice that someone on the board is playing reverse-homer, but I feel like you need a reality check if you really think that Chandler Parsons is a comparable prospect to Monroe. I was just toying around with line-ups really. the Hou-Philly connection is obvious, Det would only do this if talks with Monroe somehow soured, and Parsons would be a solid fit at the SF spot.

I'm not an advocate of trading Monroe. I just wanted to take the pulse on the community.

Everyone should read this article posted by HV. As far as I'm concerned it summed up this discussion perfectly. Parsons is a solid glue guy who's stats look a bit better than his on-court impact, partially due to Houston's uptempo style. He provides versatility, perimeter shooting and defense but sorry, he's not worth Monroe. Not by a longshot. Guys with Parson's skill set aren't exactly rare...at the end of the day, he's a role player. A very good one at that, but a role player.

I love Parsons' game, and he'd be a great fit for our team -- but you still don't trade your quarter for two dimes just because only dimes fit in the gumball machine. You either get exact change by going to a bank, or, even better, you wait for someone that really needs a quarter and try to get three dimes out of them.

There are still finances involved, of course, but if Monroe's new deal doesn't hamstring us, I'm all for keeping him unless an outstanding offer comes along. I do think he's going to evolve into something closer to what this team needs, because he's an intelligent player and winning (at least initially) is conducive to change and sacrifice.
