Yanks scout Masahiro Tanaka

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Wed Sep 4, 2013 2:43 pm

Think the Yankees front office has realized three things:

1. It can't draft pitching. Since Andy Pettite, the Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy trio has made Buck Showalter look prophetic back in 2009, "To be perfectly honest I don't see a single starter out of any of them."

2. Can't trade for pitching: While the official statement on Pineda is day to day, I would be stunned if he shows up at all during the regular season. Pavano part 2.

3. Passing on Darvish was dumb with so few good FAs wiling to come to NY.

Cashman was always skiddish on Japanese pitchers. Didn't like Matzusaka, so he went for he cheaper Kei Igawa who was the most expensive batting practice soft toss pitcher. I am glad he is realizing that this team's best way to get younger is through free agency.

Btw you can scrap the 189M plan.

Doubt it, and if they do, it sets them back even further......
Preemptively joining the Bucks and Twolves bandwagons.

This. The Yanks couldn't get in on ONE of these guys, when it's apparent the farm system is a joke? Then they spend nearly equal money in some of these cases to aging retreads. Nice.

They aren't getting his guy either. He'll be "too expensive", but then they'll go sing some bum ass 4th starter for 8 10 million a year for 3 years.

Yeah not sure about this guy.

If not, here's look at some of the guys that could be available in FA after the year:

Jacoby Ellsbury - if nothing more than to stick I to the Sox?

Shin Soo Choo - having a terrific season for the Reds .291, 20hrs, 17steals, .400obp

Brian McCann - by far the best FA catcher, 7 time All-Star

Matt Garza - Yankees have been rumored to be interested in him on and off for years. I would assume that they'll be in on Garza.

Ervin Santana - has been great for the Royals this season, but kind of a spotty record elsewhere.

Hunter Pence - I really like how this guy plays, would be a terrific addition.

Ricky Nolasco - another SP that has been pretty solid

Tim Lincecum - he's been kind of blah for a couple seasons but former Cy Young and is only still just 29.

Bronson Arroyo - solid 3rd starter, has AL East experience, always healthy, competitive, etc.

Edward Mujica - after being pretty much just a middle reliever for most his career has had a terrific season as the Cards closer. 1.91 ERA and a crazy 14.33 SO/BB ratio (only issued 3 walks in 59 innings this season).

Stephen Drew - looks like Jeter may be done...Drew would be a nice starting stopgap until they figure out what to do.

Mike Napoli - has been terrific offensively for the Sox this season, tough player.

AJ Pierzynski - offensively still able to produce and with heavy catcher market might be a (relatively) cheap signing to the catching position.

Josh Johnson - not too long ago looked like a potential ace for a staff, has had a multitude of health and inconsistency issues, but still just 29. Out for season with forearm strain. May be worth a gamble.

If they can come away with Garza, Arroyo, Pence, Drew and one of the catchers that would be a solid offseason.
