Euro league Games, Schedule 9/4/2013
On July 22, with 45 days to go until EuroBasket 2013, the Czech Republic national team started the first phase of preparatory camp for next month’s EuroBasket tournament in Slovenia.
For those that don't read Euro calendars, they list 9/4/2013 as 4/9/2013 so don't get thrown off.

LOL

But you left out, holding strong at 22nd.
GREAT BRITAIN feel two slot to 20th.
CZECH REPUBLIC
Showed plenty of offensive nous in a couple of warm-up losses against Turkey. If they can turn tight finishes into victories, their final standing in this ranking will lift prior to the event proper beginning.

Czech Republic - Russia 74:72
Czech Republic claimed a narrow win over Russia at the start of the international friendly tournament in Vilnius. Tomas Satoransky (201-PG-91) nailed 15 points, issued 6 assists and grabbed 5 boards to pace the winners.
Russia got to a storming start. They unleashed 29 points in the opening quarter to take a 10-point lead. They maintained the lead throughout the second quarter. Russia accumulated an 11-point advantage heading into the second half 41:30. But Czech Republic opened the third stanza on a 14:4 run and narrowed the deficit. They eventually pulled ahead to enjoy a 51:49 advantage at the final intermission. The teams stayed neck and neck throughout the fourth term but Czech Republic went deadly from the stripe in the dying second and escaped with a narrow win at the end. Lubos Barton (202-SF-80, college: Valparaiso) finished with 12 points, while Jan Vesely (211-F-90) added 10 points for the winners. Eugeny Voronov (194-G-86) answered with 19 points for Russia. Alexey Shved (198-G-88, agency: Alti Sport) had 17 points in the losing effort.

Right
Russia is 9th
RUSSIA
Given they are not winning too many games yet, but in something of a surprise to most onlookers, they are competing strongly with arguably the most depleted roster appearing in Slovenia. Sergey Karasev is showing he can compete at this level too.
Cleveland pick up that kid. 19th I'm keeping an eye on him. I remember watching some videos and got a really good feeling about him.

Poland's got Gortat. Impressive game. BF with the recap. http://www.bulletsforever.com/2013/9/5/ ... -overcomes
If you have access to ESPN 3 you can watch it online on replay. Jan is playing with confidence which is great but I'm even more pleased with the development of Satoransky. I'm actually glad the team has him stashed overseas for another season. Let him come over when he's ready to play meaningful minutes in a combo guard role...No need to bring him over easly and have him rot on the bench.

I was scared to look.
35 mins 53% FG, 23pts 14 rebounds 2 assists.
5/6FTs, 9/17 FG 7ORB and 7DRB
Man, he had the green light with 17 shots.
Player of the game for sure.
I'll take it. Still has to do it in the NBA but having a few good games overseas can't hurt.

Game Hero: While it's hard to look past the fantastic impact of the veteran Barton in the clutch, Jan Vesely was immense for the winners, spearheading their come-back in the second quarter and collecting a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds.

You can't help but be somewhat encouraged by his play in SL and so far in Euro. What would really help is clearing up the cluster of PFs vying for pt. Singleton and Booker should be shopped/dumped IMO. Both are easily replaceable via the d-league if we need someone down the road and we'll be just fine with a 5 man group of Nene/Okafor/Al/Seraphin/Jan (especially with Ariza's ability to give us some minutes there)....

We need a report from someone who actually saw the game, how is Jan scoring and against whom?
I will definitely by watching the Czech vs Spain game on Saturday morning to make my own assessment of Jan's game at this point and it goes w/o saying that he will have to raise his game significantly in the NBA if he if ever hopes to get his option picked-up.

I guess I can give it to you.
He played most of the time against Gortat on 5, although he was sharing the defense on him with Houska and Gortat was doubled a lot. Overall he did a fantastic job on the defensive side of the ball and did not get outmuscled by Gortat a lot. He was destroying the passing lanes for Slovenia (I would say he had at least 6 steals, not 4 like it is in the boxscore).
He was mainly scoring around the basket from feeds from teammates and putbacks. He hit one Dirk'o'jumper, but missed another three of which two were airballs. But his touch around the basket was great with a lot of little hooks and floaters. He was not afraid to look for a contact and looked confident on the free throw line, even hit a clutch FT after bricking the first one.
He was excellent in transition, he got like two dunks from it and in 2nd half he went coast to coast with a nice dish to a cutting teammate.
He played with a lot of confidence and was unbelievably pumped up after some of his great plays (mainly after the fantastic putback dunk to end the 1st half when he looked ready to go Hulk

Re: Euro league Games, Schedule 9/4/2013
I watched 2 mins of the game at the end of the first half. I heard Poland's coach pleading with his team: "we *can't* let #15 keep beating us down the court!"
When's the last time you heard an opposing coach complain about Vesley?
I also saw Vesley's rather nasty tip dunk (in traffic) at the first half buzzer. He looked *hyped*, and his teammates all mobbed him and chest bumped him while he pumpd himself up. I've never seen him look that alpha male in a Wizards uni.
Sigh. A few tidbits like this and I'm a hopeless romantic again. "Maybe *this* is the year it all clicks for Jan." "Just wait until Andray adds a few pounds of muscle." "Kwame's going to be scary once he puts it all together." "I read that Cheaney is adding that 3 point shot this year."

Thanks Keynote and CObR. From what I've read and seen from the clips, Jan is essentially back in his element and scoring the way he normally does in European-style basketball - transition buckets, quick passes, and the occasional unimpeded dunk. In the half-court, he can't do-much. Consider me unimpressed.
In the NBA he is going to have to finish strong around the basket and in the post against NBA centers, he is going to have to keep defenses honest with a respectable jump-shot.

^ You'll never find love if you're not willing to open up, clogs00.
No, you're right to be guarded, of course. I did see Jan stick a 15 foot jumper, but I'd be shocked if he were pulling that off all game long. The major thing I noticed (in admittedly two minutes of game play) was the swagger he displays while playing with his countrymen in his comfort zone. I don't see him ever being confident enough to assert himself in the same way in the NBA. So, even if his skills improves and he adds a little more size, he'll never be more than a quiet role player. He doesn't have the personality to even turn into a Birdman-esque crowd favorite. Here, he shrinks from the spotlight; over there, he was drinking it in.
Again: this is all extrapolated from 2 mins of footage viewed on my phone. So, please take it all with a few grains of salt.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. A big who can run the floor, finish at the rim, & finish off pick & rolls can have value. To ever expect Jan to be a player you give the ball to and say "get me a bucket" is a mistake. The issue with Jan's first two years is outside of open dunks he hasn't been able to finish near the basket and has been afraid to take wide open Js that present themselves. If Jan showed the ability to consistently finish off floaters/jump hoooks from 10 ft and in, and showed the ability to knock down an occasional J, and frankly justy didn't play scared, he could contribute and have value here and/or around the league.
What's clear from his performance in Euro and in SL is his game is centered around confidence. He knows in these sitautions he's not getting pulled and he doesn't defer and the differnce is showing. Now I think Nivek and Dat mentioned that confidence was an excuse and he was just lazy. I wouldn't say lazy is the right word but it could very well be that now that he's put in the work over the summer, he's more confident in his skillset and is thus more willing to show it.

What you described sounds like late 1st-round early 2nd pick, not a top-10 pick. Even if JV rises to the level of competency, would he worth the $4 Million+ to pick-up his option?
