Re: Datome's Italian National Team games
What does a players athleticism have to do with how good of a basketball player he is? I could care less if Luigi can dunk or not. It means, zilch.
It has always been, and always will be about effort. When you throw talent into the mix, it becomes awesome.
Joe Dumars was never known for his athleticism, but man was he a hell of a player. I could make a list a mile long with some of the games best players who were subpar athletes.
All I know is if he can shoot the ball like he does in these clips, and gives effort on the defensive end, he will be a major addition to the Pistons. Jumping high, means jack-all.

Probably for Blkbrd671 "White men can't jump". Maybe it's true for me because playing PG I could dunk only once in a game in 15 years, but probably someone can.
29inch vertical? i'm white and i maxed out at 36inch vertical, white me can jump, gigi kind of can jump. i do like that he went for it though, means he's not scared. maybe if he got to the rim i'd be more impressed
lately your posts are like a crowd of real gm general posters are watching and you're trying to prove you aren't a homer.
You've never seen the guy play in the NBA and everything you have to say is overwhelmingly negative. I don't get it.

Apparently Datome injured his knee today. I saw a picture of his knee, and it looked nasty, but he played through it.

it's not about vertical tough, it's about explosiveness
Are you really calling that "explosive"? I'm gettin sh* for being critical but you guys keeping posting ridiculous rebuttals.

dan2314 wrote:^ its actually kinda good to see someone talk about him as if hes already been playing on the roster rather than the rest who think every new player is going to be lebron james. i understand you want to be excited about every new player, but you can still talk about weaknesses and be correct.
There are definitely huge holes in his game, but im definitely liking that we are seeing him score the ball easily, especially from the perimeter though, and in limited minutes, that will likely be a great asset to have.
This
i've posted numerous questions regarding Gigi, and have had 0 rebuttal other than, he's amazing and your a troll, and if he doesn't succeed its because the pistons are a horrible organization.

WHAT!? your right, running all these players through combines and workouts to quantify a players athleticism is pointless. Lebron James wouldn't be the player he is, if he wasn't so damn athletic.
Also Italianxxxx poster posted that video to show how athletic Gigi is,i just simply pointed out its really not a video that screams athleticism.
It has always been, and always will be about effort. When you throw talent into the mix, it becomes awesome.
lol, while you are correct, acting like a players physical capabilities have nothing to do with his nba career is just being blind. ITs definitely part of the equation to being a great player. Also measurements definitely matter. 5'6" lebron james is not nearly as scary

How was joe Dumars a subpar athlete?
Please list you name of the games best players that were subpar athletes

His shooting should translate, its a matter of how long it takes for him to adjust to the nba, and what will keep him on the court is if he can defend. As mentioned numerous times, Gigi isn't explosive, quick or have great lateral quickness, he is long and seems to have a decent bball iq as well as hard nosed, however that's not going to matter if he can't stay in front of his defender.

There is a Eurobasket thread on the General Board that has a picture. The bone isn't out, but something is clearly wrong.

That could easily be simple swelling from a kick in the patella area. Could also be a fracture.
Need more info.

Re: Datome's Italian National Team games
Encouraging Article
I like that he's identified weakness in his game and has made concerted efforts to make changes. i do have concerns regarding his strength and ability to finish at the rim in the nba. which is going to be more physical and being a rookie , refs tend to swallow the whistle.
like i was saying, seems like our new Rip Hamilton, also that step back i think will eventually become his bread and butter in the post. i think when he gets to the nba, its going to get blocked a lot, but as he hopefully builds muscle he'll adjust and be able to hold his position.
"looked like he had enough strength", ie he needs to build muscle, also found it interesting they think he can guard SG
Statistically, the biggest edge that Gallinari has had on Datome in the past has been his ability to get to the line. Datome is automatic from the stripe, regularly shooting above 90 percent. But he rarely made use of the ability, often taking fewer than two attempts per game. There has been a noted increase in his focus in drawing fouls the past two seasons, though, up to 2.6 and 4.2 attempts, respectively.

His shooting ability has been as impressive as advertised. He has demonstrated his shooting ability in a variety of ways -- coming off catch and shoot, pick and roll and isolation. He's shown a nice step-back and some shots off the baseline are reminiscent of Rasheed Wallace. Most of Datome's work was done with the jump shot rather than attacking the rim, both from mid-range and behind the arch. He has shown the ability to put the ball on the floor competently with either hand, but lacks the athletic fluidity to get too aggressive. As the tournament has gone on he's increased his number of trips to the line, but still is only just over two per game.

Datome played quite a bit of power forward for Italy's undersized, perimeter heavy roster, but often looked like he had enough upper body strength when battling opposing post players. However, despite his lack of athleticism, the potential is there for him to work his way into the wide open shooting guard battle for the Pistons.

Re: Datome's Italian National Team games
Given that an NBA player's position (with the exception of PG) is usually defined as the position a player can defend, Gigi's definitely never going to be a SG. Waaaaay too slow. Good lord, that would be comedy.
That said, if you run a weird lineup out there that's something like Jennings, Datome, Singler, Smith, and one of Monroe or Drummond, that's going to cause all kinds of problems for the defense. Our slower wings can just do their best to play super tight man and then the bigs can deal with the penetration issues. The payoff is four guys at 6'9"+ and we'll still have adequate spacing.

he's playing right now, and playing very well through injuries and exaustion.
too bad italy hasn't got any fuel left in the tank, they're gonna lose their 3rd game in (less) than 3 days and they'll fail to qualify for world championships

Re: Datome's Italian National Team games
I have very high hopes for Gigi. If he comes through, which I expect he will big time in the roles we're asking him to play - great scorer, great teammate, just a very good NBA player -- and if Singler improves (highly likely in his 2nd year) and comes through -- great role player, sweet shooter, highly intelligent ball moving player who hustles on the court, we're going to have a brilliant group of front court players.
Seriously looking forward to this and expecting great things over the next few years from this grouping.
