OT: Mercury in the playoffs

Post#1 » by rsavaj » Fri Sep 20, 2013 4:49 am

Mercury just stole Game 1 against the Sparks in LA...Candace Parker picked up her 2nd MVP this season, but the old "we've got Diana, and you don't" mantra was validated for the umpteenth time, as Taurasi put up 30 points/7 assists/4 rebounds/2 steals.

Merc clinch the series if they win Game 2 at home on Saturday.

There are dozens of us. DOZENS!!

For real though...watching Taurasi play is a treat. Closest thing the WNBA has to a "Nash if he focused on scoring" type of player.

Pretty good game, every time I watch a Mercury game it seems to be against the Spark and Diana seems to always kill them. Britney Greiner always seems to be in foul trouble as well.

It's really hard for me to watch the WNBA but I always enjoy watching Taurasi, she balls out.

I went to a Mercury game this year and sat courtside....ill never be able to sit courtside at a suns game....lol.

But I have to say if you get good tickets its really fun being at a WNBA game in person. There are lots of hardcore fans.

I wouldn't watch a game on tv though.

Game 2 is tonight at USAC. Hopefully the Merc clinch.

Bill Simmons's take on Game 1:

Bill Simmons wrote:I took my daughter to the Sparks-Mercury WNBA playoff game. And I'll tell you what else … NO REGRETS. My daughter had a fantastic time and made me buy her a Sparks T-shirt, nachos, Sour Patch kids and a soda. We saw Floyd Mayweather and Mr. Belding. We sat next to Lisa Leslie (who couldn't be nicer). We saw Brittney Griner's first playoff game, although she was saddled by a massive knee brace and didn't look anything remotely like the Female Bill Russell … but still. We saw the best women's player of all time, Diana Taurasi, who is absolutely brilliant and killed the Sparks in the second half as I repeatedly told my daughter (who loves basketball) to watch her command of the court, watch how hard she tried on every play and watch all the subtle things she was doing. Then again, my daughter couldn't really concentrate because she was zonked out on a sugar high. I blame myself.

You know what was interesting? They gave Candace Parker the MVP before the game, even though Taurasi is still the league's best player. As Taurasi laid the smack down — 30 points and seven assists — I was sitting there thinking, This is a little like the game when Hakeem got pissed because David Robinson won the '95 MVP and decided to kick his ass. So I told my daughter the Hakeem story, but her eyes were rolling back in her head from the Sour Patch Kids, and she has no idea who Robinson and Hakeem were. Other than that, she totally followed it. Regardless, we had fun and I support any event that includes (a) getting to watch the absolute best at something (in this case, Taurasi), and (b) getting three hours of quality time with my daughter, because in five years, she won't want to hang out with me anymore and it already makes me sad.

Merc win game 3 on the road to advance to the WCF! Crazy last 10 seconds...Parker hits a layup to put the Sparks up by 1. Merc try to get it into Taurasi but can't, so they dump it into Griner instead who hits a turnaround to put the Merc up 1 with 5 seconds left. Sparks give it to Parker but she's immediately swarmed and can't get off a good shot. Game.

That was actually pretty awesome to watch! WNBA doesn't get enough credit IMO.

Griner with only 6 points but came up in the clutch. Brava!

Problem is they're going up against Minnesota now. I haven't seen the Lynx play a single game but they must be damn good, because I just checked out the Merc's record against them and it looks like they're 0-5 O_O

All I know about the WNBA is that my friend is on the Tulsa Shock, and we drafted Griner. That's pretty much it.

I don't watch any games besides last night but Griner doesn't get the ball at all. Let her go to work

A's over Royals. Lester and experience will prove that he's worth the trade.

Tigers winning it all. Tigers are, imo, peaking at the right time.

I don't know much about her game at all, but I always heard she was more of a defensive prospect. More Russel than Wilt.

But who knows. That was a nice shot she hit over Parker last night:

Penny Taylor didn't play last night. Not sure how good she is but apparently she's a pretty vital part of the team(was a big part of the last championship the Mercury won). Guess she's been injured for most of the last two seasons.

It's kinda difficult for me to watch because I have absolutely no idea about the Merc's roster except for maybe 4 or 5 players. Everybody else is just a name and a number. Still, they've won two titles since Taurasi was drafted....let's hope they can make it a third this year.

I don't think Taurasi was drfated by us, I think she was traded. WNBA players shoot free throws better than the NBA men...I will tell you that. And that little ass PG for LA is a beast. There are some players worth watching in this league. That Delle Donne chick is cold ass hell too.

Nah she was drafted with the 1st pick in 04. I remember they made a big deal of it in the paper because it was supposed to be just an overall awesome summer for Phoenix basketball(Nash comes back + drafting DT within a few months of each other).

As expected, Merc got absolutely plastered by Minny, 85-62. They've lost 10 in a row to that squad, dating back to last season.

Looks like they'll probably be eliminated this Saturday.

Oh, and this happened:
