You can say he's overpaid but if he signed an extension this off-season he may have 'only' got a 5 year, $80m deal.

Dude is still a work in progress but already damn good.

No he isn't a lot better than any of them, he just a volume shooter and a crappy one at that.

I really like Paul George, but it looks like this contract might become the same as it is with Gay's.

It probably takes into consideration the d rose rule. He is certainly a player who could qualify.

Is George or will George be a top 3 SF? Lebron is going to be primarily at the PF position, so is Melo. Durant will probably move to that position once he expands his post game and whatnot. I think George is already a top 5 SF, and it doesn't looked like he's peaked. I don't see how this is money wasted. Hibbert and George were huge in the playoffs last year-- so they definitely are the players worth investing as your franchise guys.

It sounds like an overpay, but you have a potential superstar playing for you in a small market and he wants to stay. The last thing you want to do is tell him "we'll see what offers you get" and have him sign elsewhere.

It makes a franchise seem cheap and petty when they match an offer and keep the player

lol who gives a ****.

...Uh, Paul George does?

Common business sense. Don't mess up a good relationship between your organization and your star players.

Oh god this example is incredibly lame but...

It's like playing Pokemon and you're in the safari zone, and finally a Chancey appears. You can only throw so many rocks at Chancey until she just bounces and you have to wait an eternity before another one shows up.

The lesson is, only throw so many rocks. One too many, and kiss your Chancey goodbye.

Wow...

18 million a year for 17 points and 7 rebounds and a few assists.

14 million base with 1.5 million dollar bonus if he makes all-star... Another 1 million if he cracks 20ppg.

But 18??

And Hibbert is their key player to get over out east... George will always hit a brick wall with Lebron... But Hibbert could be the Heat's kryptonite.

At least there's someone else to take the heat off Rudy Gay for being an overpaid SF on max money

George showed the ability to get to the line well in the pos and othe than his horrible first month, where he was unexpectedly thrust into a new role he averaged 19 a game on above average ts%. He gets to the line 2 or 3 times a game he should be able to put up 20+ on decent efficiency and is elite in every orher area for his position. He'll earn this deal.

FWIW, 5 years $78m is the normal "max" that George could have gotten (same as what John Wall signed for).

Any amount he gets over that, will be earned through the Rose Rule, which he may qualify for. He was all-NBA last year, and he needs to do it again this year in order to qualify (or to be named MVP, but that seems less likely). Otherwise, his contract becomes normal max sized, as has happened with Harden.

The boring answer is that the Pacers will keep him and simply let him walk at the end of the year. We can't afford to re-sign him and we can't afford to replace him with another contract, either. The only way a trade works for the Pacers is if someone offers a young talented guy on a cheap rookie deal for Granger, which doesn't seem likely.

He didn't do anything in his NBA career so far that would command that kind of money, but obviously teams were willing to overpay for his clearly very high potential, so the Pacers probably did the right thing. George will probably never be a superstar, but he will be a perennial all-star, and a very good 2nd option. On that team, he may be the de facto 1st option of course.

We could but this would be a 3+1 contract instead of a 5 year contract. Also, if we were to disrespect George so much then we could end up in the same situation that the Wolves and Love currently are. That's not a pretty place to be.

If George fails to meet the requirements of the Derrick Rose rule (like Harden did) then his contract will revert to the same contract that Harden does.

19/7/5 at 55% TS in the playoffs and he can play SG too. Two way players with his kind of impact on the defensive end are a very rare find in today's NBA at that position, so I think you have to lock them up without asking too many questions.

Um no. That's called being smart.

But it could also anger your players at times.
