Heat training camp to be held in Bahamas

Post#1 » by Ratchet_Rio » Tue Sep 24, 2013 5:27 pm

Miami Heat take training camp to Bahamas next week

The real question is are the Miami Heat getting to training camp aboard a Carnival Cruise ship?

After media day next week, the Miami Heat are taking their training camp to the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas.

Yes, that is serious, the team announced it Tuesday.

Two seasons ago — the first season after LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami — the team conducted its training camp on a military base. That was largely to try and get some time alone for the team to bond, away from the prying eyes of intense media scrutiny.

There is certainly some of that here — get away and let the team bond in a place they will enjoy. Not a lot of media outlets will pay for their beat writer/television reporter to spend a week at a resort in the Bahamas (however, if NBC would like some fantastic first hand coverage of the Heat training camp, I will offer myself up to take on that heavy burden). More than just that, this is also a reward to the team.

Remember, Pat Riley used to take his Lakers teams to do training camp in Hawaii, for the same reasons of bonding and getting out of the routine. It worked pretty well for them. Plus, Heat owner Micky Arison — chairman of the board for Carnival Cruise Lines — has a few connections in the resort world. Atlantis has the facilities, remember they hosted a college tournament there last season that included eventual national champion Louisville.

We’ll see how this works for the Heat, but for a veteran team like this they will likely enjoy the getaway. Plus Chris Andersen can work on his tan.

Oh man, there's a chance Beasley doesn't make it out of the Bahamas. Hangover 4.

that sounds awesome.

I was surprised their training camp is only four days, isn't it usually two weeks for most teams?

I like the intensity of this. Gives them a philosophy about being serene but there's a special jewel in a forbidden realm. In other words, we need to take this season with a grind but at the same health as usual is a priority in order to reach to the ultimate and uncharted territory. That's the three-peat fellas.

I hope they are taking their own drinking water because last time I was at the Bahamas the tap water tasted like poison.

Also I wonder where there's a basketball court on the island I never saw one there?

Following Media Day on Monday, Sept. 30, the Heat will travel to Paradise Island and will conduct two-a-day practice sessions in the Imperial Ballroom at the Atlantis Conference Center beginning on Tuesday.

This is really smart. We're returning pretty much the same team, and they've mostly been together for 3 years now. Good to break up the monotony and put them in foreign territory to start the season. Staying with the status quo might lead to guys' minds wandering. This keeps things fresh. Sure this doesn't have the same connotation as an army base, but this team has earned paradise (besides, we lost that year). We also learned last year that a little bit of fun (impromptu dunk-offs, Harlem Shake vid, etc.) can be a good thing for a team. This is certainly a different vibe than China. Still could be a good bonding experience nevertheless.

Hopefully the cage they're bringing for Beasley between practices is large and comfy.

They're spending the first four days of training camp there. After the first week teams have to play preseason games the rest of the way, so they need to come back stateside.

I'm sure they'll have their fair share of fun but the amount of veteran leadership on this team should be able to keep our younger and more 'adventurous' guys level-headed. #VivaLaHEAT!!!!

Went on a cruise there when I was 12 for a friend's bar mitzvah. Was awesome. Swam with sting rays!

LeBron James was four years away from an opt out that time.

Also, they're back to back champs now. They've earned it.
