Pistons Need To Trade for a SF

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Wed Sep 25, 2013 1:53 pm

Basic premise is that, although Josh Smith is slated to be our starting SF, he will likely see just as many or more minutes at PF.

Rotation:

SF - JSmoove (16) / BACKUP(S) (32)
PF - Monroe (14) / Smith (16) / CV (18)
C - Drummond (30) / Monroe (18)

Unless we're ready for 32 minutes per game of Singler/Datome, we need to trade for a legit SF capable of handling big minutes. IMO, Rudy Gay would be a perfect fit (athletic, young, plays at least above-average D). But whether its him or someone else, I feel a move is necessary.

Rudy gay is a volume shooter that can't shoot. he's exactly what we don't need.

Another option could be Evan Turner....especially with the 76ers looking to blow it up and tank.

But basically, we need to upgrade SF asap.

Not to mention dat fat extremely overpaid contract which would severely limit us from everything.

dat fat contract would expire before we have to extend Drummond....so its a non-issue.

If we can extend Gay to a deal starting around $8-9 million, it actually SAVES us money. His salary would go from $18ish million in the last year of his current contract, to $9ish million, creating about $9 million in cap savings instantly.

I don't think this team needs a SF, but a SG.

If the Pistons did trade for a SF, then I am all for Wilson Chandler.

Between Smith, Singler, Datome, Jerebko and Stuckey we should be able to cover the SF spot.
No point wasting all that money on an inefficient chucker like Gay.

Come on Pete. You and I both know there is no way for this team to acquire an impact small forward. We could only get the Singler, Datome, and Jerebko types. We aren't trading Monroe so it happening. I'm just glad this wasn't another cry for Tobias Harris.

The whole premise of this thread is somewhere on the "premature" to "nutso" scale.

This team just got put together. I'm, frankly,a huge fan of the way Dumars has built this roster. I'm a big Singler fan - the kid can play. I'm extremely pumped to see Datome in our lineup - my guess is he'll be perfect for us. Either and likely both of these guys is more than capable of giving us solid to very good minutes as our backup SF. The idea that Smith can't play there has been disproven by history: advanced stats show he defends that position extremely well.

Monroe is one of the best young bigs in the game. Drummond could be/should be a BB god.

Hell, I think JJ's a good player, and I doubt he'll break into our regular rotation.

The F and C spots seems very well manned and with a lot of depth.

It's time to relax, let the guys play and be coached up, and see what we've got.

I don't see how Rudy Gay moves the needle in Detroit. Tayshaun Prince replaced him in Memphis, and the team became significantly better, now that they removed his terrible shot selection, and ball-stopping isolation plays. His pay is just another factor that makes it ridiculous to consider trading for him. He really has negative value with that contract right now.

Evan Turner isn't much better. He's an okay player, that's about it.

Yup, backup SF is arguably our biggest need right now. Smith will be splitting minutes between both forward positions so we are going to need a legit 6th man SF to play all of those backup SF minutes. I have absolutely no trust in Jerebko/Singler/Datome. Right now I want Stuckey to start at SG so that KCP can be our backup SG and SF.

Jennings/Billups
Stuckey/KCP
Smith/KCP/Singler
Monroe/Smith
Drummond/Monroe

Something like that would be best for our team as currently constructed.

This is my point.

Its not so much the who (Gay, Turner, whoever), but I feel we need to upgrade the SF spot. We need a guy capapble of getting ~30 minutes per night backing up JSmoove at SF.

Wilson Chandler is probably the best out there value per dollar spent. He is excellent on defense and can knock down the 3.

Giving up on Singler after his good rookie year - and as if he won't improve like all young players (who are dedicated) improve their games, and on Datome who to my eyes looks like a perfect fit for us, makes zero sense to me.

We'll see who's right, I guess, since the chances of a trade at this point is somewhere between nil and zip.

True. But Denver isn't likely to trade him either. They lost Iggy, and Gallo is still recovering from his knee injury.

We need a 2/3 who can really shoot the ball. Guys like Rudy Gay and Evan Turner don't fit the bill

You'll only get that type of impact guy if you move Monroe which destroys the point of Smith at SF. Singler is going to have to be that guy unfortunately.

I don't get the whole Rudy Gay thing. It's the classic square peg in a round hole. Just cause you can slam it in doesn't mean it fits. I want to puke every time I see his name mentioned on this Pistons thread.

Upgrading a position is usually not a bad thing, but I disagree with the premise that we need a 30 min per game guy. What we actually need is to see what our rotation looks like and evaluate both the talent and fit of guys already on our roster. If a great deal fell in our laps that is one thing... But pretty unlikely to happen.

Rudy Gay does nothing for me, not a team player at all which is what we need. I'd be all for Chandler but wouldn't sell the ship for him. I believe Datome, Singler, and maybe even a little but of Jerebko can fill up those 30 or so minutes with good numbers. I'd like to see how our backups work before we make another major trade.
