Heat sign Roger Mason Jr

Post#1 » by LEIF » Fri Sep 27, 2013 7:10 pm

per his Twitter account....

he is a serviceable 3rd PG and an experienced veteran. Will be interesting to see how many players we hold and if he has a shot to make the team.

Good move. He can shoot.

Pg: Chalmers / Cole / Mason Jr.
Sg: Wade / Allen
Sf: James / Battier / Jones
Pf: Haslem / Beasley / Lewis
Cc: Bosh / Anderson / Oden / Anthony

That looks like a finished product to me....three deep at every spot except shooting guard, and Mason can actually play shooting guard, as well. Don't get me wrong, Mase is no starter, but he's a very good shooter. If he's allowed to play off of Bosh, Wade and James he could enjoy quite the renaissance.

Roger Mason Jr is not a PG, he's a 3 point shooting SG (and that's all he does). MAYBE could play as a SF in some lineups, but not really.

Dont really get or love this addition. feel like we would have been better served addaing a creator (Like Von Wafer, or even a shooting Center like Hamilton) since we have enough shooters with Battier, Allen, JJ, Lewis...Mason brings nothing speical to the plate.

Im hoping he can be a good defender but it's not really to be expected. He is a very good shooter though. 33 YO and moves better then JJ.

I guess Beasley will take the last spot and the young prosepcts all go to sioux falls.

Final depth chart :

Rio/Cole
Wade/Allen/Mason
LBJ/Battier/Lewis/JJ
Haslem/Beasley/Battier
Bosh/Birdman/Joel/Oden

In what world is Mason Jr a PG?
He has career assist numbers of 1.3, and career high average of 2.
As mentioned in the previous post, at 6ft 5 he is a 3pt shooter at the 2 or 3 with alright defence.
Solid signing nonetheless.

This contract like the one Beasley signed is a show me and we will see. HEAT know they need to look down the road for another shooter and with Ray getting up in age, we may need a filler for a few games this year. If Roger can show he is a company man, act the right way and make his open 3's he gets to stay, if he comes here and misses open jumpers, we move on.

In what world is Roger Mason a PG? The world where the PGs job is to spot up and shoot 3s. People act like I am calling him a PG like JKidd. If Damon Jones was labeled a PG then Mason Jr is a PG. I should have just not mentioned 3rd string PG because truth is our roster is position-less so depth charts and such are almost pointless.

He shot 42% from 3 on the Hornets last season and has a very pure stroke. He should be fine.

Rex, this is an non-guaranteed deal and Hamilton is still coming to camp. Though I see almost no chance Hamilton makes it instead of Mason, it's not like he's been chosen over him or any other camp invitee.

There seem to be a few misconceptions about Mason: 1) That he's a PG. For some reason he seems short, but he's listed at 6-5. Not much of a creator, so he's definitely a SG. (EDIT: LEIF does bring up a good point, I'm personally referring to people who think he's been a PG throughout his career) 2) That he's disappeared into the land of DNPCDs and spot minutes. 18mpg isn't a ton, but the fact that it was in New Orleans has people thinking he vanished. He played in 69 games last year and hit the 3rd most 3s on the team.

I preferred Wafer for the creativity, quickness, and athleticism he'd provide, but I don't mind this for a number of reasons:

- Mason is much more proven in the league, as a shooter, defender, and a player in general. Wafer had that one very good season he never replicated, and has never stuck around anywhere for over a year it seems. Further, he played overseas last year.

- Even if it made more sense on the court, Wafer isn't exactly the kind of personality the Heat are looking to add to the locker room. Mason is a respected vet and member of the NBPA. His best season was with a very similar franchise to the Heat; the Spurs. We know he can function in a similar situation and role to what we have to offer.

- We really need all of our perimeter role players to be steady, knockdown shooters, considering their limited opportunities and the way defenses play LeWade. Wafer is a streaky, rhythm shooter, and it might be hard for him to find that rhythm in a spot role. Mason has the kind of release that would appear to be able to Let It Fly successfully on short notice. He's also capable of pulling-up from 3 off a couple of dribbles and maintaining his form.

- Mason can slide comfortably into the role Miller vacated. He can start when Wade is out (he started 13 games last year), and take a DNP when we're fully healthy. Unlike Wafer, Mason has been a good defender throughout his career, though I'm not sure how much has been lost with age. At least the fundamentals are there. I feel more comfortable with the idea of Mason starting and understanding his role than Wafer (and I definitely don't want JJ starting when Wade is out).

I think he definitely makes the team. Skolnick tweeted this is just as much as tryout for the Heat as it is a showcase for the league, but we usually only do that with vets who need to be resurrected (Livingston, Penny, QRich). I think Pat knows what he's getting with Mason. It's just not wise to hand out guaranteed money when you don't need to.

LBJ teammates search

Can they breathe and stand behind the 3 pt line? Check
Can they make 3's at a high rate? Check

Done deal
Stop being so disrespectful.

Yea i guess you make some senseable points Smush. Masonis a respected veteran, I'll be shocked if we cut him after camp..we wouldn't have invited him just to waste his time, he's a known commodity at this stage. And he already worked out for Pat during the last week. Also he's coming off a very nice season when he shot lights out.

He is a nice enough player, i do exept him to do well here. I also thought of him a less white, less broken, less rebounding but better defending version of Mike Miller.

I do like the fact that we added a SG, Wade's and Allen's minutes should and will be managed very carfuly in this upcoming regular season, And Mason could take their minutes on occasion and provide solid play without a huge production dropoff.

The biggest question mark for me is his defense. best case scenario - he gives us 85-90% of Allen's offense while being a significantly more capable defender. that's a very useful option to have, not only as an injury insurance.

We'll get him into better shape. Despite being shorter than Miller, he's known for hitting well against closeouts.

If he defends decently and doesn't turn the ball over, fans might end up clamoring for him getting minutes over Ray. :D

Honestly why do we keep JJ and Lewis on the roster?

Lewis is at least 6-10 and can do a little more than JJ offensively. Not trading them and no reason to eat their deals.

@mchalmers15 1h

I want all the heat fans to welcome and follow my homie @moneymase to the heat family. A mentor to me since I got to the league. #3peat

Also, Mason is from DC, like Beasley. Good chance they know each other as well.

Lewis might bounce back this year, it takes time to strengthen one's legs.

JJ just out of loyalty really, he's way too one dimensional.

Oh, and both have guaranteed contracts. With the tax, that's a big factor.

But again, I didnt lose all hope about Lewis yet. he shot well last year but wasn't mobile or strong enough. if he can get his body in really good shape he can be a good stretch 4 or a scoring SF.

I get the contract part completely. Part of the whole Heat family thing burns them with situations like JJ, he really should just walk away. Lewis I mean, I guess he can bounce back I just dont see it. I think he had a couple solid years and thats about all he was worth. He can do much and always seems lost out there. Take your ring and go home lol.

Do you know any above-average players that would willingly face DNP-CDs on a nightly basis on this already stacked roster for about $1 million? If so, please send your suggestions to:

Miami HEAT

Seems like just another camp body. He's nothing special, but we'll see. I think Beas is a lock, but not sure about anyone else coming in.
