Not a bad free agent talent for vet minimum (better than Harrington I'd say) but where are minutes going to come from at the 3 unless there is a deal coming?

Again w/ Childress? I want EG to submit to a paternity test.

NBD -- we have 15 guaranteed guys filling every roster spot. I can't imagine we'd cut anyone for Childress. Not even Singleton.

Ernie is doing him a favor, I'd speculate -- giving him some camp time so that maybe some team in the league will notice the fact.

EG's always doing favors, for Memphis, Minnesota, Dallas, New Orleans...I wish someone would remember him at payback time.

I'm not sure which is more cringe-worthy at this point - this thread or the happy thoughts thread.

wow - how many pages back was this thread before yesterday?

as per my comment in the Okafor thread, we should look at Singleton as in James.

Training camp invitee Josh Childress said he worked out for New Orleans, Cleveland and San Antonio, but signed with the Wizards instead.

Uh oh, I may have figured this out, and I don't like it. You won't either.

Given that we've got a full deck of 15 guaranteed contracts, Josh is signed for camp, not beyond. To me, this seems to indicate that

1. None of those other 3 teams made him an offer, and

2. Ernie is trying to trade Chris Singleton somehow for something/someone that doesn't eat up a roster spot. If unsuccessful, he'll waive Singleton by the end of October, and

3. Welcome to the Washington Wizards Josh Childress!!

Am I wrong? What think you?

Based on history, that seems like a reasonable projection.

I think Ariza will be traded, maybe in a two for one deal.

Ted doesn't like buy outs or paying for nothing in return, or else Rashard Lewis wouldn't have been traded for Okafor and Ariza. Blatche's amnesty was a bad blood move and a one-time, good to go regarding cap move per league rules. I doubt Ted wants to waive any player. I also think Wittman likes Chris Singleton a lot more than he likes Vesely. Management tipped their hand last season when they reportedly wanted to trade Ariza for Caron Butler.

If I were to guess, Vesely and Ariza get traded for one player. Childress does end up a Wizard, because IMO they're not figuring on re-signing Trevor Ariza. Besides, they drafted Otto Porter to be the SF of the future. I could be very wrong but I could see Ariza being out and Childress being in, for better or worse.

Why would Childress come to Washington unless he thought he had a decent shot to stick? If he sticks, someone else goes. Maybe he knows Dan Grunfeld and Ernie well from Stanford days and he feels he can stick. Only happens if Ariza goes IMO.

ONE MORE THING: Childress played with Harrington on the Hawks years back. Harrington played with Nene. Chemistry, experience, and Randy Wittman seeming to prefer veterans points to Childress having a decent shot if he can play at all well IMO.

Anything is possible with those players. Ves, Booker, Trevor A, Singleton. Even Kevin, though I think they are feeling better about Kevin.

I think its clear from Randy's remarks that he hasn't been a Ves fan because he thinks Ves is mentally weak. What I don't know is if he thinks he is hopefully that way or if its a growing thing.

But with Nene not sounding trilled about playing center and AH lighter, things are not as good as they would like. I'm sure they are evaluating things daily and working the back channel to line things up in case they need to pull a deal.

assuming one roots for the Wizards, you probably are not particularly thrilled
for the simple reason that Childress just isn't a very good player.

Josh isn't better than Singleton? Come on now. Josh's complaint has been he hasn't had a decent pass first point setting him up, which is a problem because he has a late release because of that odd shooting form. When open, he's a good shooter (in other words, Wall drive and dish). Plays good d. Distributes well for his size. I'd certainly rather have him than Singleton. And he's gotta beat Rice out for maybe five minutes a game at the max. I see no problem here (unless the complaint is not getting a center instead).

He won't even make the roster.

Childress was terrific his first four years in the league (w/ the Hawks). He was incredibly efficient. But the last few years, since he came back from Greece, he hasn't been able to duplicate that level of performance. I'm not remembering whether he had injury problems w/ the Suns -- if so, maybe that's why he hasn't been able to stay on the floor. Last year he didn't produce much, but the sample is tiny.

I'm not high on Chris Singleton's potential, but I don't see that there's likely much of a gain for us in eating his salary and replacing him w/ Childress. I could be wrong.

Anyway I was speculating about Childress -- not much else to do these days but speculate!
