James Nunnally added to camp roster
I guess this guy lit our summer league team up. http://www.azcentral.com/insiders/paulc ... mp-roster/

He's got a good stroke. pretty deadly from 3-pt in the Summer League.
Probably won't make the team.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
Really nice form on that jumpshot, very quick release.
Who knows if he'll stick, but if it's the pre-req to another deal then no harm bringing a body in with some upside still.

3-D specialist. Poor man's Raja, I guess.
I'm rooting for him to make the team but that would mean we have to cut 3 others: Ish Smith, Malcolm Lee, and _____.
Fill in the blank. My guess is Kravstov or Christmas.

I'm picking trade...
I think they keep Kravstov, not sure why. Harder to find a competent/athletic big than it is a bad ball handling/shoot first PG

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
WTF?
As RSAVAJ said above, this means that the Suns have to cut 3 players now with at least partially guaranteed deals.
Ish Smith and Malcom Lee were only acquired as throw in's so it's safe to say that they have a target on their back. But signing both Christmas and now Nunnally means the Suns are spending money just to cut one of them.
I wonder how much the guarantee was for each deal? $20k? $200k? I'm kind of surprised Sarver is spending money this way. It looks like this is going to be a competitive training camp.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
I suspect he's purely a training camp body at this stage. Now they can run a 9-on-9 scrimmage:
Dragic v Bledsoe
Marshall v Smith
Christmas v Nunnally
Brown v Tucker
Goodwin v Lee
Green v Marcus
Frye v Markieff
Len v Gortat
Plumlee v Kraftsov
Just looking at that, yeah 10 guards are way too many. Even if you go three deep and count Tucker as a SF, you'd only want to run with 6 max meaning 3 should be cut.
It will probably come down to how Bledsoe responds to playing full time SG minutes or if he's better suited to PG.
- If he can succeed as a SG, then we keep Marshall as 2nd and Ish as 3rd PG. Gone are Brown and 2 of Lee/Christmas/Nunnally.
- If he's better at PG, we'll lose one of Marshall/ Ish and two of Brown/Lee/Christmas/Nunnally.
That's what I reckon anyway.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
I hope he makes it. This team needs shooters. I'd take him over Christmas of Kravtsov.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
I like the idea of a 6-7 shooting guard who can shoot and play D. I see more use for a guy like that on the roster than say, Kendall Marshall
Drop Lee and Marshall. Let Nunnally and Christmas battle over a spot.

Sounds like a Danny Green type of player.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
Pretty sure a camp deal includes a very small amount of gtd money. Something in the neighborhood of $15-20k. It has to be a fraction of a rookie min which, if memory serves is +/- $600k.
Keep in mind, these are camp deals, not fully gtd season contracts.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
As a UCSB alumni, I watched this guy play every home game in person during his senior season. Not being biased, this is a good signing for the Suns. Nunnally should make this basketball team over Ish Smith, Christmas, and Lee and I would probably take him over Shannon Brown as well. He's a decently athletic swingman who can really score and shoot the basketball at an efficient rate. If it weren't for playing with Orlando Johnson (Indiana Pacers) at UCSB, Nunnally would have certainly averaged around 20 points per game his junior and senior seasons.
For the people that are touting him to be a defensive specialist, I will warn that he is NOT that type of player yet. He is certainly not a bad on the ball defender by any means but I would not say his defensive abilities are at the level of a Danny Green or Raja Bell just yet. UCSB played mostly 2-3 zone defense which probably hurt Nunnally's development in man to man defense. I will say though that Nunnally's ability to create shots for himself off the dribble is underrated and I would probably say he is a better all around scorer than both Green and Bell in his peak years. The biggest strength of Nunally's game is his ability to shoot the ball, catch and shoot or off the dribble. He has a quick release on his jumpshot and his mechanics are very fluid which is why he shoots at such an efficient rate. Overall, I really feel Nunnally should make this team and if given the opportunity, would give the Suns a much needed shooter and scorer at 2/3 position.

Wouldn't hurt to start developing some 3&D guys.

I want gunners. This team will not be successful without them. If this guy can nail threes, he needs to be on the team.

Re: James Nunnally added to camp roster
^Agreed.
That team last year didn't have an above average outside shooter amongst them.
Lee, Smith and Christmas/Nunnally get the chop, unless we can offload Brown + Marshall ANYWHERE for ANYTHING...
