MEDIA DAY SETS SEASON OF EXPECTATIONS IN MOTION

“For us, it’s going to be all about the process,” said Paul, who agreed to a long-term contract to stay in Los Angeles in July. “We can’t control what people say or the hype or the expectations or the good things people say or the bad things people say. For us, and it sounds pretty cliché, but it’s about the guys in our locker room. It’s coming into practice every day and preparing and giving ourselves an opportunity to win. That’s what you want at the end of the day.”

The chance to win is what attracted veterans like Antawn Jamison to the Clippers.

“Right now, just getting this out of the way and knowing that tomorrow we get started, this is the most excited I’ve ever been and this is not coming from a guy who’s been in the league for two or three years,” Jamison, entering his 16th NBA season and first with the Clippers, said. “I think this is pretty much the most talented team I’ve been a part of. This team has the most chemistry that I’ve been a part of. The thing I like about it is nobody’s worrying about contracts, nobody’s thinking about All-Star appearances. I like that this team has come into the season with a certain chip on their shoulder, a frustration after the way the season ended last year. And the most important thing is that we know we have to take it to the next level, not only take it to the next level, but actually believe that.”

And of all the things that came out of Media day, it was likely that. The Clippers are not merely aiming to capitalize on last season’s successes. Moreover, they are looking to outrun them.

“This summer has been extremely productive from our standpoint,” Griffin said, sitting next to Paul and Jordan at the dais. “Honestly, through my four years now this is the most excited I’ve ever been.”

What Doc Rivers is telling Blake Griffin

“The areas where we struggled were huge. One is transition. With the athleticism we have, we should be a better transition defensive team,” Rivers said on the podium. “And then guarding the 3-point line. We were 26th or 27th in the league in 3-point defense. And in a league that shoots 3s, we have to get better at that.”

Mood and tone might be Rivers’ strongest assets as team spokesman, but he’s not careless with his words in the slightest. Rivers wants to convey that he’s taking ownership not just of the future, but also of the past. When you coach the Celtics or Lakers, associating yourself with the mystique of an organization is easy, but with the Clippers, history isn’t something people who work for the team want to be constantly reminded of.

Lots of coaches say lots of nice things about lots of players on Media Day, but Rivers is doing something larger here -- he’s bringing back the old Blake Griffin narrative, the one about the kid who conditions by running up sand dunes, treats his body like a temple and rides himself harder than anyone else could. Rivers, fascinated by Griffin’s ability to move the ball, opened a dialogue with Griffin about how to utilize his skill set in the pinch post, where refined big men such as Pau Gasol and Kevin Garnett prospered as both scorers and facilitators.

Rivers might have been talking to the media on Monday, but the message was targeted at his 24-year-old power forward. That message? This is your team as much as it is anyone’s, and we’re going to help you claim it.

Rivers Expects Larger Role For Jordan

This was Monday with Rivers beginning his first Clippers training camp: “I tend to want to stay big at the end of games, so he’ll be on the floor a lot.”

“Oh, I think it’s huge for us,” Rivers said. “I think he will be consistent. I’m looking at DeAndre Jordan as an All-Defense player. I think he should be on the All-Defense team. I think he should be a candidate to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. And that is going to require consistency for him to do that. We need him to be the captain of our defense, so I’m putting a lot on his plate. All the other stuff will take care of itself. If he does that job, I’m not that concerned about everything else.”

“I know that defensively, it starts with me down there and I have to communicate to my teammates,” Jordan said, embracing the expectations. “But I have to set an example as well. Defense my main priority and offense is going to come second. I’ll let these guys” — noting the presence of Paul and Griffin with him on stage — “handle that. I’m confident. He (Rivers) makes me even more confident. So do my teammates. Its going to take me going out there to play the right way and help our team win.”

ClipperBlog Media Day Recap

On playing big vs. small:

“It’s nice to have the option. I like size. I know size wins. At the end of the day, it’s been proven out. Having said that, you have to be able to play small as well. I would say with this team, this is the first time that I’ve literally had my option. We can stay big, or we can small and we can be really good small. When I say small, it’d be one of those big guys on the floor — Blake or D.J. But you can put Dudley at the four; he played it in Phoenix with Alvin. We have tons of shooting. So it’s probably the most versatile team in that way that I’ve coached.”

On packing the lane defensively:

“Oh yeah, we’re going to pack it in. I thought they did a good job of that here last year. I thought they packed it in well, but then you have to get back out. This summer, when guys are in the gym, we’ve talked about that and worked on that a lot. It’s multiple efforts. I think anyone can make a choice to pack it in, but then you have to pack it in and get out. That’s the multiple efforts that we have to get better at.”

Doc Rivers: Clippers' future is bright

"I look at our group and our team, and I think we have a chance to do something," Rivers said. "That excites you. When you look at the players that are on the paper, and if we can get them on the floor performing together, I think we can be a special team."

Clippers players didn't shy away from the championship expectations heading into training camp, either.

"We embrace it," Clippers forward Blake Griffin said. "We have higher expectations for ourselves than anybody else. We don't have any championships. That's the goal. That's the bottom line. We haven't really accomplished anything yet. Our whole goal is to accomplish that. We put those expectations on ourselves as well. That's the way it should be. We don't think we've arrived until we win a championship."

Clippers guard Chris Paul said he is excited to play for Rivers and that he already has experienced some of the coach's tough love in conversations.

"In the first meeting I had with Doc, he pretty much told me I wasn't anything," Paul said. "He told me I hadn't done anything in this league, and he was right. You don't always want somebody who's going to tell you everything you want to hear."

REGGIE BULLOCK

On earning minutes as a rookie:

“I’m definitely ready for the challenge. I’m willing do anything I need to do to get minutes on the floor. Coach [Rivers] knows what I’m able to do, shoot the ball and defend. I’m ready to just do that in training camp. And just try to work my way into earning minutes for this team.”

JAMAL CRAWFORD

On his level of anticipation for the season and his expectations:

“I think that once the summer is over with the first practice it’s like the first day of school you just can’t sleep the night before because you’re excited. For us it’s setting the tone from day one. The Clippers this summer showed that they were serious and that they wanted to be a championship contender. So, they got a coach with a championship pedigree. Doc is one of the best coaches out there. He has been one of the best coaches out there for the past few years so with him at the helm we are going to be in good shape.

DARREN COLLISON

On his role as a backup point guard after mostly starting the last three seasons:

“If I have to sacrifice my role as a starter and give up some of my aspirations and my dreams just to win a championship, I’ll do that. I think that’s part of sacrifice. I think that’s a part of being on a good team and helping the team win. I’m all up for that. It wasn’t easy, but at the same time if that’s what it’s going to take to win a championship, then I’m all up for it.”

i really look forward to seeeing DJ on the defensive end. he certainly has the size and athleticism and potential for DPOY but i look for him this season to be in less foul trouble, and be in the right place more. cant wait for the season to start
