PreSeason Game Thread

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Mon Oct 7, 2013 6:02 pm

Lots of inactivity on the board, despite the fact the season starts in less than two weeks.

We're 1-2 in Preseason Games. Not that the final results matter.

But games 1 & 3 were essentially blowouts when our starters were in.

Sunday's game vs New Orleans was especially disheartening as we saw some of the obvious flaws of the roster.

With Jenkins and Lou out, we lack perimeter scoring off the bench. Teague and Korver struggled to score today and that contributed greatly to the low Final Score.

With Gustavo hurt, our frontcourt is once again undersized and undermanned.

Scott looks like he'll contribute offensively.

Dennis looks like he'll be a beast defensively, but struggle to be much of an offensive threat while he works the kinks out of that jumpshot.

I like Royal Ivey to make the roster as the 3rd PG. (So long Shelvin)
I like James Johnson to make the team as the backup SF. (So long Damien Wilkins)
I think Korver will be benched in favor of either Jenkins or Jared Cunningham, but he'll still get plenty of burn.

Thoughts on what we've seen yet from the new roster, coaching staff and system?

First impressions:

LOVE the ball movement. We look like an entirely different team. The ball swinging from side to side; backcuts galore.

Teams are going to ignore Carroll all day. He's cutting to the basket and getting a fair amount of open layups as a result.

Horford as Point Forward (Point Center?) is gonna work pretty well. He is so unselfish and has great vision.

Teague is rusty...

We have a lot of work to do. Offensively AND defensively.

Not sure I'm a fan of so many of our players just sitting around the three-point line waiting for the ball.

Down by 20 in the 3rd quarter, our old Hawks are starting to emerge a bit. The ball movement has slowed, the defense is suffering.

And these are the starters...

Man. We are just refusing to stay on Miami's shooters. Doubling into the paint every possession. That'll work against the Bobcats, but not against a team full of shooters like Miami has.

Pero Antic went 1-5 from 3-pt range through 3 and a half quarters.

That is NOT okay.

Hawks went on a 18-4 run to end get it to a 2 point game.

Missed all of that while watching the Falcons attempt to deal with the Jets.

Ok, scouting report time. What'd y'all see?

Just got in. Looks like a rear end kicking in the 1st. Did our bench beat their bench or did we play our starters in the 2nd half?

Their starters dominated our starters. Specifically Bosh and their shooters. (they shot over 50% from 3-pt range for most of the game before the scrubs started throwing up bricks at the end.)

Our 2nd/3rd units brought us back.

Schroeder has to get used to defending in the NBA...or at least earn the respect of NBA officials. Otherwise he'll always be in foul trouble.

Our offense features a lot of just standing around the 3-pt line. I don't like that.

Missed the game watching the Falcons and Braves choke last night, smh. Now with Julio Jones out for the Falcons, basketball season seems like the move for Atlanta sports. Man, I'm really disappointing about the Braves, they had it and gave up a bomb in the 8th.

Damien Wilkins was indeed one of the first cuts this week. This might be the end of the road for the guy. I wish him best of luck.

On a happier note, John Jenkins is back in practice and expected to play this week during our pre-season home opener!!!

I still hope (believe) he can supplant Korver as a starter. I like and respect KK, but when his shot isn't falling he brings nothing else to the team. He's a huge liability. Jenkins is a more complete player, IMO.

It appears that he's competing with Shelvin Mack for the 3rd PG slot after Teague and Schröder - so probably. Wouldn't want 2 prospects on the bench at one position.

Having said that, I'd be a little surprised if he ended the season with us. Between L Williams coming back, the (hopeful) development of Schröder, and depth needs elsewhere on the court, we'd be hard-pressed to keep a journeyman 3rd PG type around later in the season.
