Wow, can't belief his game is translating from the Greek league to the NBA so quickly. How was his defense? (Other than the blocks anyway) Did his non-highlight moments look pretty raw?
He really struggled fighting through screens. Off the ball in terms of awareness and team D, he was quite good. That being said, he did tend to sink too much off of people in help D, but that is something that is easily correctable over time. On the ball in iso situations, he was also quite good.
The major issue was his defense off of picks (which is a huge part of NBA defense). He showed a very poor ability to both fight through and recover against picks, whether they were on the ball in pick and roll situations, or off the ball. In that regard, I'd say he was terrible. Of course, he's only 18 and this was his first NBA level action, so he gets a bit of a pass.
Given his focus and hustle, I'm not overly concerned as a Bucks fan. His problems defensively are from a lack of understanding much more than a lack of ability or will. He played very hard defensively both before the shot went up and then after when you need to secure the rebound. He also swatted the **** out of a pass on the break (in the vid above) and destroyed another fast break that isn't in the vid.
I was skeptical of the pick, but he blew me away in his first game. Offensively, he has a very nice floor game. It is obvious that he flat out understands the game.
The main thing I want to see going forward is how he learns to defend in pick and roll situations. Given his very gangly body type, he can be very easy to lock up by a big on a pick. He needs to learn how to work through that.
Again, I was very skeptical of the pick as a Bucks fan, but I was blown away by what I saw. He's a natural basketball player in all aspects with a phenomenal build.
