Re: washington "REDSKINS"
There's no other team name that references the physical features of a minority. It may be mainly associated with football but it's still just as offensive. There's no way around it.

Re: washington "REDSKINS"
George Preston Marshall, the originator of the name, was a blatant racist. Does that have any bearing on this or is it irrelevant?
I'm not espousing one view or the other, just genuinely curious whether that factors into it or not in people's minds.

Well, wouldn't he have to be? I don't know why would someone create a malicious slang term if they weren't blatant racists
What you're saying just kind of reverberates the same issue

Maybe I wasn't clear. What I'm saying is, Marshall was a known racist. Should the fact that he was a racist be taken into consideration when assessing whether the name Redskins is offensive or not? Surely Marshall didn't use the term Redskins as a term of endearment (or did he?). Does Marshall's reputation as a racist matter in this debate? Or is it irrelevant?

I understand what you're saying; I think I was the one who wasn't clear. Yes, it should be taken into consideration because it's coupled with the main issue, but it's ultimately irrelevant because it doesn't add anything new to the debate. Before you mentioned who he was, I just assumed the creator or creators of the word were racists. It's inevitable that we'd all reach that conclusion

Even though I don't like the name, I would assume that if used it as a team name he meant it with a positive connotation.

Oneida Indian Nation invites Snyder to explain his position to Native Americans directly
“In the spirit of the dialogue that Mr. Snyder says he is willing to engage in, we are inviting him to join the NFL delegation in its upcoming meeting at our Homelands,” Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter said in a release issued in response to the letter. “During his visit, we will organize a special meeting of Oneida Nation families where Mr. Snyder can personally explain to them why he believes they deserve to be called ‘redskins.’"
