What do the Nets need to reach that next level?

Post#1 » by pasfru » Sat Oct 5, 2013 10:14 pm

They're contenders in the East right now for sure, but the general consensus is the Heat and Pacers are better than them. What do they need to reach their level or better?

Health, a good defensive system played with enthusiasm, a good offensive system played with enthusiasm, good play from the bench, everyone knowing their roles, the maturing and toughening (and passing) of Brook Lopez and good coaching.

Even with all that, they might not make it to the Finals

Five things:

1. Defense
2. Durability
3. D-Will at his best
4. Brook taking another step forward
5. Good coaching

Those were most of the key things missing last year.

the pacers are a fraud team and the last team we need to worry about.

to pass the heat/bulls we need:

-Lopez to stop playing like a giant soft vagina
-dwill to stop being pouty and play like a top 10 player
-pierce and KG to step up as leaders
-find a unit that works defensively and go with it

really, it comes down to defense and defensive rebounding. if we can do that, we can play with anyone

We matched up well with Indiana last year, and last year's team is inferior.

I think we just have to go out there and execute. Lopez has to take another step upwards, and Williams needs to be healthy. Otherwise I'm not too worried.

Nothing, if you're talking about controllables.

Other than that, just some luck.

1. Health
2. Brook fully breaking out
3. Chemistry
4. Deron goes back to being Deron, like 2nd half of last year Deron

I will simplify it to just health. Because the veterans we added wont allow Deron or Brook to play less than. And chemistry will come the more games we play together.

By the playoffs, the most important guy will be Deron. He cant be the guy he was in the playoffs last season. ANd he is the most irreplaceable player on the roster this season. Second half regular season Deron is what it takes to contend with Miami. And while I like Indy more than some... sorry, not buying it. Healthy we will beat that team. And I will say, they need way more out of Hibbert than we need out of Lopez to be true contenders. As much as we complain about Brook's highs and lows...its nothing compared to Roy Slim Shady Hibbiddy Bibbitty.

You know what? Isnt a great feeling to say everything we need is from within? Think about it. When is the last time the answer to the question, so what do the Nets need wasnt something we needed to draft, sign or trade for? All the ingredients are here. No idea if its enough to beat LBJ. But lets cross that bridge when we come to it. Health.

Basically agree. Barring injury with the cast we have the only reason for Lopez and D-Will not to perform is they are cream puffs. Also I liked watching how animated the whole team was against the Wiz, beginning of a firm identity if it keeps up.

The Nets have everything they need to contend for a chip.

Most of their concerns come from age and coaching

If kg and PP play like they did last yr, team does not tune out kidd, and they all stay relativley healthy, team can seriously challenge any team in the playoffs.

KG and PP are both due for huge declines sooner or later
Kidd is a rookie coach, and just retired from playing. There will be some growing pains no matter how good he is as a coach.

But really, the answer is a better GM lol.

They need Jason Kidd to stay out of the way. Take us to the promise land, Lawrence Frank.

i think the age thing is blown insanely out of control. we really have 1 old guy to have any concerns about, Garnett. as far as missing time, our younger players are more of a concern then Pierce, kirilenko, or terry

The biggest thing I hated about Lawrence Frank I remember when he was head coach here was his sub patterns. All Kidd has to do is manage egos (which likely won't even be a problem) and be better at sub patterns than his predecessors. I mean...all he has to do is be Joe Torre.

Joe Torre, huh...

I wonder whos career Kidd would "Proctor" by mimicking Torre. Evans? Livingston?

Defense is really all. Could be some depth issues but it would take some unlikely circumstances.

Pierce is gonna be 36 when the season starts...KG is 37...terry is 36.
Those two guys are supposed to be the ones to push the squad to championship contention.
It is not more missing time as it is the rapid decline of NBA players past 35 yrs old.

I do think it is a slight concern and not a large one, as they will be turned to as role players. I am 100% confident they can fulfill those roles and then some, even at 36 & 37
Having a quality player backing them up in Kirilenko also helps greatly.

Personally, I think this team is the second or third best squad in the NBA (when/if healthy), and can really challenge and possibly beat the Heat in a series. Really looking forward to watching this squad, never really seen one quite like it. Kidd being head coach really takes the cake for me.
