Another preseason thread but what's up with some of the players calves ? do you think it is an advantage to have chicken legs like tyson chandler and nerlens noel or more strong legs like ray allen and blake griffin or it just doens't matter? do you agree that having easy legs makes you have better lateral movement, also be qucker but it makes it harder to have a long injury free career because of the heavier superior body that the knees have to suport? also how does a professional basketball player have this embarassing legs? giannis antetokounmpo

Muscle size doesn't matter, the NBA is a skill league.

Dude that's gross. If he was a girl i wouldn't even look cause she'd be so skinny.

I don't calfs mean anything for having good bounce. They definitely help the jumpshot, not like dunking.

Yeah I agree with you, it makes you quicker but one day all the pysicality will catch up. Need to ut some weight on to survive in the nba.

NEVER SKIP LEG DAY!

you mean "leg muscle size doesn't matter", right? because if you want to mess with someone in the paint then sure as hell muscle size does matter.

I believe having a balanced body is key, but what is a balanced body?
Balanced for what? It depends on what you want from it, or what your role is.
Having legs-lite (we're taking into account the legs are ofcourse, as it should be for an nba player, strong regardless) does mean improved lateral movement usually, which doesn't mean people with strong legs can't be fast laterally - look at Avery Bradley for example, he's got Football legs, yet they move as if they're both powered by duracell batteries. Chuck Hayes can train those legs as much as he wants, he'll never get them to move anywhere close to that speed, but he has a different, chubby body type and those pillars serve him well defending the post, where a lower center of gravity is essential.
Legs-lite also improve vertical quickness and repetition, as in, you can get up faster, and repeat it faster, because regardless of mass, legs are still the biggest and strongest muscles and even in a lighter form, provide more than enough force to lift you up, and if they weigh less, you go up faster.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, legs and their utility depends on what you want from your game, or in most cases, much of what the players have been accustomed to doing game style has been largely influenced by their body type/legs since they were kids. Changing weight, and adding muscle cramps your style, and you must adjust.
Durability depends on how you take care of your body during the game(either you're reckless like Beasley and the like, or more in control like Ray Allen) and away from the game a lot more then what your legs are.
So yeah, it is, as with everything, on the individual to maximize his potencial and body type, and keep his body well taken care of.

For whatever reason a lot of the great leapers through the years have really had freakishly skinny little chicken legs, so there appears to be some sort of correlation there. Seems counter intuitive, but you show me Shawn Kemp's legs and show me Chuck Hayes's legs, and I can probably tell you who is the better leaper without seeing anything else. Of course if it turns into a pushing and shoving match the guys with the little stick legs have no chance against Hayes, but outside of the post that's not a huge factor in basketball.

depend on your game
Chuck Hayes game is based on interior defense, establish position, and drawing charge
he needs strong legs
he doesn't have to jump 40" in the air to block shot

Depends how the player plays, their height, weight etc. Kevin Durant has chicken legs, but doesn't need to have built up legs cause he's 6'11 and doesn't need to add more jumps to his game. He also doesn't need to rise above defenders too much. Tmac was the same way, he was tall enough and his game was based on agility.

That Tyson Chandler picture is weird though. Looks like he definitely skips leg days as his upper body is more built and his lower half are twigs.

Tip: Calves don't help you jump, it's the upper part of your legs.

If you want to mess with someone in the paint, and want to do it correctly, then core/leg strength is very important. Fewer and fewer players understand this as post-play is being slowly phased out of the game, but the best way to establish position in the paint is with your legs and butt, not your arms or shoulders.

Many Black people do not overly prominent gastrus muscles (the big part of their calves.) It`s a joke amongst some Black people that calves aren`t a Black muscle. Obviously it is not an absolute thing (Ray Allen, JR Smith, Chuck Hayes, for example buck the trend, but guys like Sprewell, T-Mac, Chandler, KG always had skinny legs and skinny builds)

The actual shape of the calf muscle won`t determine how explosive or powerful it is. It is just shaped differently.

His career could actually be over if someone pulls an ankle-breaker move on him.

calf muscles are built up from being on your tip toes all the time, looking over barriers and peaking at stuff

so only perverts have buff calf muscles

Best post almost ever. for 2 reasons..

1) You make a lot of sense & as that "stereotypical white boy in the black group," it a great go to joke.
2) The Sprewell reference. My favorite ever. Thank you for making my day.

Wow. The size of your legs doesn't necessarily determine their strength. You may have ridiculously skinny legs, but thanks to quick and explosive muscles, you may still be a great leaper. Same thing with simple strength, size and bulk doesn't matter as much as one might think.

He's a 7 foot tall teenager. His legs are supposed to be skinny.
