What do you guys think about firing Mel Tucker at the end of this season and replacing him with a competent DC.
The Bears defense has gotten worse under Tucker so far and absolutely no defensive line rush at all. A person that I would love to have is Ron Rivera, who is on the hot seat in Carolina & probably going to be fired.

Yeah, but right now it's hard to distinguish if it's a coaching/scheme issue or just a talent issue. By all accounts, Tucker came in to in the same system. Biggest change on the D were the linebackers, who seem to be more of a solution than a problem. Was Izzy better than we thought? Because aside from injury, that's the only change on the line. D Line wasn't getting after it even when Melton was in there.

Hey this might sound like a darkhorse out-of-nowhere choice, but have you guys ever heard of Lovie Smith? That dude was a monster with those Tampa Bay defenses and at one point for almost 10 years in the league, he had the most takeaways in the league! Whatever happened to him?
TLDR: Current Pulse Readings (9/2/22)
Bulls:
UCLA Basketball:
UCLA Football: Chip Kelly magic time
Cubs: Uh, 2016
Blackhawks: Uh, 2015
Bears: Poor Justin Fields
FC Barcelona: Economic levers

Lovie would be so much better as DC than Tucker but Lovie would never take the job nor would we offer it. If the job is open, I would think that Ron Rivera would take it.

Don't know if I'd throw Tucker under the bus yet. The defense suffered for a couple years under Lovie as well, as after the Super Bowl year Mark Anderson came back to earth, Harris declined with injuries, and Ogunleye got old. Defense wasn't great again until they broke the bank for Peppers.
Lovie and Marinelli were not magicians. Without the personnel to pressure the QB on the front 4, this defense simply doesn't worj.

We weren't ever bottom-feeding bad like our unit seems to be striving for in a hurry.

Bears were 28th in total defense in 07'. Better than the ranking thus far this season, but they also had Urlacher and weren't starting guys off the street at DT

Re: Different DC after this season?
The only way he's fired is if we end up at the bottom of the league defensively and miss the playoffs.

Wrong. If he's fired, ICLO, it's because Emery and Trestman want to go in a different direction with the defense. Briggs, Tillman, Jennings, Peppers, Melton, Wright, Wootton, Williams, Anderson and Collins are all up for contract next year. If they want to go toward a 3-4 or keep the 4-3 but change the philosophy then next year is the year to do it. Tucker may or may not be the right guy to lead that new defense and that'll determine if he's back or not.
This year, the problem with the defense is all personnel on the defensive line. We've lost both our 3 technique tackles which are critical to making the Tampa-2 scheme work, further compounded by Peppers playing like an undrafted free agent and Wootton and McClellin both severely underwhelming. It's a domino effect from there.
