You can blame lovie for kellen davis and Tice. It was his choice to put those guys at their respective roles.

All in all, the ownership wanted to give Lovie one more chance which messed up Emery's ability to really start building this team and filling the holes it had.

Reality is because the handcuffs the ownership gave Emery by making him keep Lovie last year only gave Emery really 1 offseason to reshape this team. And he absolutely had to concentrate on the offense as they had the biggest holes on it.

Most of this board "got it". In the old Tucker thread, most on this board was hesitant to embrace him.

And it not as easy as oh we need a new coordinator. No u might have to replace the guy who hired that crap coordinator.Even offensively, this is emery's second offensive coordinator in two years. Why did he hire tice? Because he was there?

Tice was Lovie's choice. On top of that, most established offensive minds are hesitant to take a job under a lame-duck head coach.

Bottom line is that Emery is not to blame for Tice being hired.

Another problem is why the heck didnt they sign a TE last year? Kellen Winslow was available but anyone could have done better than Kellen Davis.

Kellen Winslow is not even a top-echelon TE. He wasn't gonna lead us to a Superbowl last season.

Also this offseason we didnt even attempt to sign melton long term. He mucked up his own damn cap paying full scale for a player he got 4 games out of.

You're actually criticizing Emery for not signing Melton long-term?

I wish the guy a full recovery, but odds of him being the same after an ACL tear are not good. Franchising Melton is proving to be a very wise decision by Emery.

So then he went cheapo at nickleback, mlb, olb, backup dline, (turk mcbride, collins).

Our starting Nickel (Kelvin Hayden) was lost for the season earlier this year.

Our MLB & OLB signings were only stop-gaps until our two draft picks were prepared to take over. It makes absolutely no sense to pay premium money for those positions when you just drafted two players to be the long-term starters at those positions.

Why would we not go cheap for backup D-Linemen?.......Teams don't invest big money in backups.

All in all, im happy with offense worried about the defense, but i feel better about the defense now than i did a week ago because of bostic. But if the defense continues to play this way there has to be accountability and not just Peppers.

It doesn't matter who lines up at LB & in the secondary, we're going absolutely nowhere if we don't get pressure from our front four.

It's debatable if it's the coaching or regression of players, but I'm blaming the coaching. The easy thing to do is blame Peppers age, but Wooten & Shane are both young guys. The "age" excuse doesn't work because every single one of our D-Linemen have regressed from last season.

That means that it's bad coaching, IMHO.

Great post! But I do want to add one thing about the "cheapo backups on the DLine". We did sign Sedrick Ellis who was a well established and pretty well accomplished vet to be our defensive tackle. He retired during the preseason which probably could not be foreseen by Emery. In other words, it wasn't a lack of vision or inaction that led to us being too thin at DT... some of it was crap luck.

Also, I see nothing wrong with a one year assessment if the team looks "on the cusp". Before a GM comes in, they're on the outside looking in. Having a season to get an insider's view of the team could only better shape decisions. All bets off if there is a big opportunity cost... like the perfect coach or perfect qb comes available as the GM is entering and he has to strike quick to take advantage of that. But I don't think we were in that situation.

Bottom line... we're rebuilding. This is the year we redesigned the offense, and next year is probably the year we redesign the defense. Next year, I expect a brand new defensive scheme (possibly new DC) and 4-7 brand new starters with some at core positions on defense. On offense, the biggest outcome this year will be determining whether Cutler is the long term qb and whether we're resigning Slauson. After that, we're just looking for the center of the future and that's about it... its in minor tinkering mode. Rebuilding was the right thing to do at the right time since we were about to have so many transitioning contracts and a team getting marginally worse year to year instead of better.
