Double Pivot and Sikma Move

Post#1 » by Archaeon » Tue Oct 22, 2013 2:40 am

COUNTERMOVE: DOUBLE PIVOT

Michael Jordan, for a time the best back-to-the-basket player in the game, used to fake a shot while moving in one direction, then instead of stepping in the opposite direction when his defender bit on the fake, Jordan would pivot again in the same direction as he was moving and finish right at the rim.

SIKMA MOVE

The "Sikma move," otherwise known as the reverse pivot, is a simple square-up maneuver that calls for the player to move his non-pivot foot towards the basket (and the defender) as he squares up as opposed to outside and away from the defender. This prohibits the defensive player from stepping up into the offensive player and taking away valuable space. The reverse pivot clears space for an open shot.

This article from clutchfans describe a move called double pivot and sikma move. Despite the desciption,I'm not sure how it look like. Anyone can explain better? Do we have video of it?

Double pivot is a step through with a double pump or clutch or whatever. Setup is a regular turnaround fade way, then when you turn to fadeaway the defender jumps, step through for a lay-up. Kobe does this all the time albeit with pass off the backboard because he always seems to make his move 2-3 feet farther then Jordan.

I think the sikma move is where you catch in the post area and swing through in the direction of the defender. Bosh and Tim Duncan use this move to setup most of their shots. Gasol does this like 1/4 of the time.

Sikma move is called reverse pivot, not double pivot, and the description is pretty good, what exactly you don't understand? It's one of the most basic moves in basketball and very effective at creating space, it's a shame every prospect, especially young bigs, isn't intensively drilled in it.

Here's a youtube video of it anyway:

The double pivot is deadly. If you perfect your turnaround jumper you can destroy dudes on the block with it.

Jordan hit that move on a very young & raw Kobe in the all star game. Fast forward to 1:40.

Here it is again @ 2:25

When I think of reverse pivot I think of Kobe's version, when he reverses after pump faking.

Funny enough in the second one he does the Sikma move too.

Pretty common move .....

Was Jordan ever really the best back to the basket player in the league ? I mean I know he was dirt nasty in the post but something tells me I'd rather dump the ball to Hakeem down there

Theoretically speaking guards should be better post players because they're more likely to have a better jumpshot, they're more mobile, and more athletic. As a post player I'd take Jordan, but there's less players equipped to guard Hakeem than there are for Jordan so he gains the advantage there.

I had know idea that it was called the Sikma Move but it's one of my favourites. It opens up so many options.

I love the Sikma into jab step into one-dribble-step-back. Almost always gets me an open look from anywhere.
