The Radical move: Call Lovie

I know, I know. It defies all football logic. It spits in the face of progress. It reeks of desperation. But let's look at the situation.

1. The offense looks pretty darn good, even with McCown at the helm.

2. The defense needs a boost and clearly looks to have abandoned Mel Tucker's message. Maybe it wasn't Mel, maybe it was the task of him having to come in and run Lovie's defense. Who knows. What we do know is it has only gotten worse and players like Briggs even came out before the last game and commented on the line scheme in a subtle jab at Tucker.

3. Lovie's not doing anything, and this is his baby. I have to think that he's still got some love for the players and a temp job (especially if he could turn things around) may be a good platform to get his next job. See Bruce Arians.

4. You hire Lovie for the season. If he gets a HC job, you've got enough time to both draft for and hire your new DC. There is 0 drop off in terms of him having to learn the scheme, and if he walks you're right where you would have been if you had fired Tucker at the end of the season.

It's a bold move for a coach to bring in the previous coach, but I think it may be crazy (and impactful) enough to work.

Why are you going to bring back Lovie when you actually cleaned the house ? This would suppose two steps back on the "reconstruction"

I have to think Lovie feels totally disrespected by the Bears organization...He went 10-6 and got fired. Why would he come back to this? He wouldn't...He's purposefully taking the year off...He's studying the game. And he'll get another head coaching offer next offseason.

Lovie isn't a miracle worker. While Tucker may be doing a poor job, personnel is the problem moreso than anything. When Ogunleye and Brown got old and Tommie Harris declined, and there were all the problems with the revolving door at safety, Lovie's defense suffered. Remember Ced Benson running for 200 yards as the Bengals drubbed us 45-10 in 2009?

Calling Lovie is a pretty rational move because he was the man behind a sturdy defense for 9 years and has a rapport with the players already. In all other professions, you'd train your replacement, and they'd tell you to call them if you needed them.

Ego on both sides would probably prevent this from happening --- Lovie wouldn't want to be at a lesser position with lesser credit and be thus pigeonholed forever as a DC, Phil Emery wouldn't want to admit he made some kind of mistake. But that's not unusual in this league or any pro sports.

At any rate, were on the fast track to a revolving door of DC's if not complete competitive irrelevance.

No. Ever watch the Karate Kid? "Karate yes, OK. Karate no, OK. Karate so-so, squish like grape." Even if the defense looked a little better (and remember that it actually got worse the one year Lovie tried calling the signals before giving the reins to Marinelli) it would totally undermine Trestman's leadership and could cause bigger problems in the locker room long term. The Lovie chapter is over whether it was warranted or not. It's time to move forward.
