It was a pretty bad contract, but I think there was a worse contract in the same city: Albert Haynesworth's with the Redskins. He did NOTHING here. At least Gil before he got hurt gave us some awesome memories.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

Mcilvaine's Sonics contract was the worst ever.
It pissed off Shawn Kemp who then left town and the days of Seattle being in the NBA finals were over.
Seattle's support of the team was never the same afterwards which led to the team being moved to Oklahoma City and being renamed the Thunder.

Too bad nobody warned the Wizards before the deal was signed.
Trading Gilbert for Rashard Lewis (and one less year) was probably the best Wizards deal, ever. I think it tops when Michael Jordan managed to move Juwan Howard, who at the time made about the same max deal as Kevin Garnett.
So, if I criticize EG/Abe for signing Gil despite signs pointing to the risk; I have to give EG credit for trading Gilbert to his friend, the former Orlando GM.
Arenas was very shrewd to opt out and get paid like he did when he did. He secured a boat load of cheddar. I know he's a generous man. Probably helping people behind the scenes to this day. Grotto sold or not, bad contract didn't go to the worst guy IMO.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

The NY Knicks gave Allen Houston 6 years at 100million American. I think after his second year he had health issues. Year 5 and 6 Houston was not even in the league.

Give Webby a call. All the fun loving personality. None of the crazy foolishness.
I will never understand the man love people have for Gil after what a train wreck he was. Yeah, he was fun for a little while and could score but he was never a complete player. Its like dating the hot chick that you know is bat sht nuts. You gotta know when to get get out and don't look back.
Gil played the Wizards. And he blow his rehab by being Gil. Just didn't know how to stand still. CCJ called it. I called it. Others called it. But Abe had son love for him and that's how Abe rolled. He did the same with Wes. He did it will Gil. He did it with EFJ.
Anyway, I think Beal is going to supplant Gil as people favorite Wizards before to long. Even the Gil man love fans.

Sorry Hands, I have to call you on it again since you didn't respond in the Fire Ernie thread. Who was it that negotiated with Gilbert on the terms of his contract?

Re: Gilbert Arenas contract voted worst ever!
The strong familial bond between Abe and Gil, with its undercurrent of psychosexual pathology, led the two into a tragic downward spiral of doom.
If you consider that the contract itself probably devalued the franchise at the time of its sale to Leonsis, and that meant less money to the Pollin family, money that Abe no doubt intended for them to receive, then he's still paying Arenas from beyond the grave.
How long before Gil has to switch to $1 bills in the bathroom?

Re: Gilbert Arenas contract voted worst ever!
Arenas was great for DC. He filled the seats, took us to the playoffs. Elevated his playing level to elite Agent and gave $100 per point to a local school every home game. Abe also matched the money for the kids.
He was great for DC and basketball.
If you think Arenas is the only player with a gun, think again. I think Areans looking back got a raw deal because of what we know now. Javaris Crittenton is a thug and a killer. Below is an issue that happened with the prosecutor and the thug.
Crittenton the former NBA player/Crips gangbanger who will be going on trial for murder, allegedly made threats to the prosecutor in his case, and so now he has a curfew and an ankle monitor. The judge made this ruling after hearing the recording of a jailhouse phone call in which Crittenton said he “wanted to beat the sh*t out of the [district attorney]” following this encounter:

Re: Gilbert Arenas contract voted worst ever!
Without a doubt, Amar'e's contract is worse. I don't know if it is the worst ever, but it's absolutely worse than Gil's was. Amare's contract is uninsured. Because of that, it's absolutely untradaeble. Dolan is the only rich sap out there wasteful and incompetent enough to pay for it. And the Knicks can't amnesty him because they stupidly burned their amnesty on Chauncey Billups, who only had two seasons and 14.8 million left on his deal at the time. What a bunch of **** ups.
Gil's contract actually got traded and then Orlando was able to amnesty him.
We've been free and clear of the ramifications of Gil's deal for a couple of years, and we got Wall out of the abject failure of Gil's deal. Amar'e's contract is going to continue ruining New York for at least another year after this one. Moreover, we were never realistically going to come close to contending with that Arenas construction, whether he worked out or not. The Knicks could have legitimately built a contender around Melo if not for Amar'e's enormous deal. Imagine if they'd gotten CP3 or Dwight instead... And back in the summer of 2010, EVERYONE knew Amar'e was the panic move plan C after LeBron, Dirk, Wade, and Bosh all got signed. In our heart of hearts, we all knew those guys weren't going to New York. Everyone knew Amar'e was a giant risk and that this was probably going to end badly for the Knicks.
And it has and you'll see the final blow come when Melo leaves New York because he knows they simply can not build a contender around him. They have no attractive trade assets whatsoever, no draft picks, and no cap room.
The Knicks endured years of sucking to create the cap space for the summer of 2010 too.
And he're we are going into the 2013-2014 season and Mike Woodson is talking about managing Amar'e minutes to 10 or 15 a night. That's Jan Vesely playing time! Factor in his ruinous contract and he's a tremendously less valuable player than Jan Vesely!!
It's depressing because Amar'e is a nice guy and he used to be a terrific player and I wanted to see him come back. Such is life.

It was a stunning heist. How could anyone have been against it. What makes it more incredible is that EVERYONE knew our absolute most pressing priority was getting rid of Gil ASAP. He simply could not be here with Wall. To this day, the only explanation for how we were able to pull that off is that Otis Smith was even more incompetent than Ernie. Deal by deal, Smith killed the Golden Goose with Dwight, who LOVED Orlando and the people of Orlando loved him. He massively overpayed Jameer Nelson and JJ Redick and whichever crappy Richardson they had at the time plus he picked up Hedo Turkoglu's awful contract. Just a whole lot of long term 10-12 million per year crap deals.
Trading for Gil should have been grounds for firing Smith on the spot. One of many fireable offenses. Orlando wised up soon after and fired Smith and then made out fairly well in the Dwight trade itself. And I guess they've drafted well too. If not for that, they could be situated in the cellar for years because of Smith's spectacular mismanagement.
Another deal that was pretty stunning in 2010-2011 but hasn't ended nearly as well for EG was trading Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong for Mike Bibby (immediately bought out), Mo Evans, Jordan Crawford, and the pick that became Chris Singleton. That was pretty much a heist too except we subsequently blew all of the assets we got back in return. Who knows what we did with the cap space we gained from the deal, and Crawford and Singleton were busts. Imagine if we'd gotten something like Kenneth Faried from that though... Kenneth Faried for essentially nothing. Magic Beans.

Like I said. EG does some things well. Just don't let him draft. Either get ride of him or make him VP of operations. He clearly can clear up a mess well. And he can find decent trades. Just not very good at drafting.

what? Hands you sound like a butt hurt fans that the Bulls were during the Rose stand out last season.
Gil was great!! he was a top 3 player in the league before the injury!!! The rush back ruined everything. Just because of the Gun thing doesnt mean fans should paint a bad picture of Gil that never was. I like Beal but I also like Gil since he brought back excitement to the Wizards when he was here.

I look at the entire Gil expire. Not just the highlights. I said trade him before his contract year right in the middle of his prime numbers because I saw his shortcomings along with what he did well. He didn't play D. He was a PG that shot 30 ft 3s with 20 on the clock. He wasn't overly athletic but he was coordinated. He didn't want to act like the captain but he didn't want to give props to those that did. He was becoming a total clown. I never thought he would lead them anywhere and I know the max contract was on the way and that would kill the franchise. Even without the injury he wasn't leading them anywhere.
Ends up I was right.
Gil was more a Monte Ellis then a Rose. I constantly compared him to Iverson and said I hope Gil doesn't learn to late. Well he didn't. He blow his rehab. My worst fear about his outcome happened and we were stuck holding the bag. And its sad. I really liked Gil when he got here. Not all of him but most. Seemed like a nice young man. But by Gils own words, he was all a game and and act. He was a persona. But trust me. Its not like Rose last year. I was saying everything I am saying now right in the middle of when Gil was producing at his peak. And trust me, it went over like a fart in church. Cuz everyone was drinking the Gil Kookaid. And there was lots of EFJ love as well. Me, I was part of the anti weave and heave club. No D coaching EJ that road Gil, CB and AJ into the ground playing them league leading min trying to make a name for himself. Well he got him money and fooled the Sixers. Now he isn't a HC in the NBA anymore. Dude road Kidd and then Gil. I never thought he was a good coach. Hated his rotations. Hated his weave and his no D.
I don't get that sense about Beal. He won't get off the path he is one. Beal I believe in.
