If we offer $20m to the Rays for Maddon, and trade a prospect to Boston for Butterfield, we'd get 25 WAR from our coaching staff alone!

Until they were sidelined due to injury.

We'd better get new coach training staff to avoid this or I'll be pissed, although I'm voting for Duncan over Butterfield in our 90 wins through coaching alone scenario.

And a little OT, but does TB trade Maddon next offseason? He's got two years left on his deal and you have to imagine it'll be tough for a team with TB's budgetary restraints to get him re-signed again with his reputation. Perhaps even more important for TB is the status of Friedman. I have to believe the next time a big-money franchise decides it's start all over time, he'll be choice 1,2, and 3.

There's room for both; Duncan as pitching coach, Butterfield as bench coach, birdie championship time.

He seems to enjoy it there, and as managers have to agree to be 'traded', it'd likely have to come on the back of a poor season. But one of these days, they won't succeed in purging $20m from the books while getting better, and at that point the vultures will descend.

Read in the Sun that among the candidates for 1b coach are: Tim Raines, Jon Nunnally, Tim Lieper, Rich Miller

58 runs a season over the average hitting coach coming our way.

I always liked Seitzer as a hitter on the Royals back in the day for some reason

Heh, Seitzer had the misfortune of playing at the wrong time. Ten years later and teams would've valued his high OBP a lot more, and he wouldn't have become a mid-career journeyman because his average fell off a bit.

I don't know. Seitzer's power is horrible. Looking him up on FG I like his career less now than I liked the memory of him in KC (and honestly didn't remember that he spent so much time as a Brewer). He does seem like a case of a guy who should take credit for his own BABIP. I refuse to believe that's luck. When on, he shot balls where defenders weren't. I'm relatively optimistic about this, but if a couple months in I see Jose holding back trying to slap a ball the other way, I'm gonna lose my ****.

Edit well after the fact: On the other hand, if he can get through to a guy like Gose, that'd be pretty sweet. I think Colby is the biggest lineup piece that could be used to add and while I'm terrified of Gose the every day CF and would vastly prefer him as the 4th, with more holes than money to fill, this route may be the most palatable of a number of crap options.
