No -- you still need great overall production.

And I'm not one who worships at the altar of "building through the draft," as if that excludes other ways of acquiring talent. My point is that the draft continues to be a place to find contributors wherever a team picks.

For example, in 2011, the Kings took Isaiah Thomas with the last pick in the draft. He'd have made a fine backup PG behind Wall, and he'd STILL be playing cheap.

Basically, the front office's disdain for using 2nd round picks is wrong-headed thinking. Second round selections are sorta like very small bets. Make the pick, pay him a small signing bonus, invest some coaching time and attention to work with him. Maybe there's a 1-in-10 chance he'll be a significant contributor (though the odds are likely better than that).

To me, that doesn't suggest avoiding the second round, it would suggest getting more -- or at least being willing to use the ones I have.

Think about it like this: Say there's a carnival game where you get to throw a bean bag through a hole. There's a 1-in-10 chance of getting it through the hole, but if you can do it, you could win $100,000. The cost per toss is 1-cent. Don't know about you, but I'd want to buy lots of throws.

Well, I agree that draft picks are valuable, and it's sad that EG sucks at it. But is he really a bad GM? I guess you can look at the pile of steaming crap the bench was last year and say, EG's suckiness at the draft cost the Zards any chance at the playoffs last year. But you know -- I'm pretty happy he got Gortat. This is going to be a good season.

The first pick in Round 2 might be one of the most valuable assets a team can have (maybe the first 3-5 really). You get a guy who might just as have easily gone in round 1, but you don't have to guarantee his salary. Of the last 10 drafts, at least 25% of the guys picked at that spot have become *outstanding* NBA players, and we may see a couple more out of the same group (Pliess / Bojanovic) if and when they come over.

Note that it takes a real fool to say that for every 1 good guy taken after #12, there are "more than ten" busts. But even fools learn over time, right?

So, welcome (fool).

Also by the way, hope they develop and get better. Especially Singleton. I thought he had some skills. they just never developed them.

But I wasn't interested in drafting him. I wanted Nikola or M Morris or T Harris.

My busts from that year were M Brooks and Harper. Which by the way lots of people liked.

As were people before and right after the draft happy they got Singleton. He wasn't a target of mine.

Zero minutes game one for Vesely.

Ernie and Randy, that's not good IMO..

They already declined the options on Vesely and Singleton, so they will be UFA next summer.
