No Country For Old GMs - Inaugural Season

Post#1 » by Illuminaire » Tue Oct 22, 2013 11:36 pm

The Draft
An exciting, nail-biting, action packed draft was attended by three of eight teams. A few others set their draft preferences ahead of time, most notably CCJ who's cunning list of bargain players made it to the last round of the draft before going over budget. Lessons were learned about auto-drafting in a salary cap league, and the commish earned his volunteer peanuts by manually correcting rosters after the fact.

Most Expensive Players No One Touched With A Ten Foot Pole
1. Bryant, Kobe - 30,453,805
2. Nowitzki, Dirk - 22,721,381
3. Stoudemire, Amar'e - 21,679,893
4. Johnson, Joe - 21,466,718
5. Anthony, Carmelo - 21,388,954

Undrafted Wizards Players
Everyone but Wall and Beal. Lol? Lol.

Week One - The Battle Begins
Close-fought matchups finally broke open over the weekend. Time will tell whether dominant teams remain dominant, or fall prey to that ancient enemy, regression to mean.

Every day dozens of die-hard fans gather around the pale LCD light of the RealGM Wizboard to argue about what it really takes to run a basketball team. We discuss strategies, debate moves, and blather endlessly over the minutiae of meaningless trades - yet it's been years since anyone put their virtual money where their mouths were. I think it's high time we started a new board tradition... a persistent fantasy basketball league for Wizboard regulars.

The Big Idea
  • * A keeper league with persistent franchises (teams) from year to year.
  • * Rookie drafts (starting 2014) to prove your real true drafting prowess.
  • * At least one board regular can experience the joys of triumph after another perennially disappointing Wizards season.

Details, Details
  • * Where: The fantasy site Fantrax. Tons of options.
  • * When: The draft will be held 2:00PM EST on Sunday, November 3rd.
  • * What: Nine category head-to-head league. (Pts, Reb, Ast, St, Blk, FT, FG%, 3Pt, TO)
  • * Who: As many teams as we have interested members, to a maximum of 30.
  • * How Much: Money? Free. I'll cover the premium league cost. Time? Whatever you want to put in. (We can swap franchise owners out between seasons, so don't fear commitment)
Initial teams will be set via a standard serpentine draft. In season acquisitions will be handled via bidding from a set free agency budget. Between seasons there will be a rookie draft, keeper contracts and a free agent auction. Teams will need to balance real player salaries and stay under the real NBA luxury cap to guide their franchise towards long-term success. Almost like being a real GM! :)

If You've Read This Far
If you're interested please PM me with an email address I can use to add you to the league site. The deadline for joining is one hour before draft time.

Want To Join?
Expansion drafts for the 2014-15 season will be held in the Spring. PM me to be added to the list and get in before the Rookie draft too. Owners on the waiting list may also have the option of taking over an existing franchise if a current owner has to bow out, or just disappears into the ether of the internet. :P

I'll play! I would be happy to do it with any of the rules, but would prob favor:

1. Serpentine
2. Yes to salary cap
3. Keeper limit

I'll PM you with my email.
Making extreme statements like "only" sounds like there are "no" Jokics in this draft? Jokic is an engine that was drafted in the 2nd round. Always a chance to see diamond dropped by sloppy burgular after a theft.

I would be interested.

1. auction - is this an option for salary cap? definitely prefer auction for normal league
2. salary cap - stronger preference than draft style
3. contract

I'm setting Nate Wolters top 75 overall and top 12 PG in my draft queue, as we speak, Illuminaire.

I can't justify this rationally, but dammit, I want that guy on my team!

Join and do it. :D And remember, if we get this started now... you'll have a rookie draft in the spring. You could even trade existing keepers for extra draft picks! >.>

Awesome. That makes four. We might need to start a little bit after the real NBA opener, but I'm starting to feel hopeful that this will really happen.

Me too. I never did a keeper league before - sounds like fun.

We've hit the magic number of eight, so I will set up the league later today and begin inviting players. If you have yet to vote on the parameters listed, now is the time to get your opinion in.

(Note: More players are still welcome! Heck, we can take this to 30. :P Jump right in! I'll post a deadline for joining here once we nail down a draft date)

It is possible to combine an auction draft with the salary cap options, in different ways. We can use artificial player salaries based on auction values, or we can use real player salaries in combination with the real NBA cap. The latter is darned flipping cool but does not mesh elegantly with an auction draft (Bidding $33 to win Kyrie's 5.9 million dollar salary may be a tad esoteric for everyone).

The Fantrax site has a pretty dizzying array of options, depending on whether we want to lean more towards realism or abstraction.

I'm still playing with the settings. Will finalize things tomorrow; giving the five interested guys who haven't voted one last chance to weigh in. :)

Everyone who sent me an email address will receive an invitation this evening. Everyone who did not send me an email address will receive a PM asking for one. :P

I have constructed a full league constitution which may frighten the unwary. Don't worry, it's just my attempt to cover the many eventualities and nuances of a keeper/salary cap league ahead of time. The key points are easy to summarize - the only complex part is the contract selection. (Which we can axe in favor of a simple "you have 5 keepers, 6 if you are under the Salary Cap" if needed).

For anyone still thinking about throwing their hat in the ring... may this article spur you into action: http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-trian ... basketball

... so sayeth the Oracle of Grantland!

All interested parties have been invited. Verbal and CCJ, I don't think you guys have accepted yet - check your mail and let me know if I need to re-send the invite.

The draft will be held this Sunday at 2PM EST. The deadline for anyone else to be added to the league will be one hour before the draft. Last call for owners to join the league's first season!

I am really much busier than normal. Not sure I'm going to have a lot of time in the coming week(s). If I don't accept in the next 24-48 hours, I won't be joining.

Time is getting hectic, and I'm no longer sure I can commit, Illuminaire.

Is Autodraft an option? I can do the league, but can't make the draft live.

I believe autodraft is an option. I don't know if the software is smart enough to take salary cap stuff into account... but we can let auto-draftees tinker manually after the draft if that's an issue.

CCJ - I hope you can make it, bro. I for one am looking forward to you being there. :) Also... you only need to set one lineup a week, so this league should be pretty friendly for those with limited time. It's really the draft and between season parts that could drain more time than usual for people who get into research or wheeling and dealing.

Edit: Verified, autodraft will happen if you're not there. You can set your rankings ahead of time by going to the aptly named "Rank Players" section.

Bump for anyone who wants to be a last minute addition. Looking forward to the draft tomorrow, figuring I'll get spanked by anyone who is more familiar with salary cap leagues than me. Keeping track of both position limits and cash is going to be interesting; I hope I don't end up having to take 4 minimum salary guys at the end of my roster, or only spending half the salary cap, or drafting Rudy Gay in a panic...
