John Schuhmann goes a little more in-depth in explaining what the purpose of the cameras is. The cameras were available to around half of the league last season, but have since been installed in every arena.

SportVU Adds To The Conversation

Every season, the NBA and its fans get smarter, and the league’s new deal with Stats LLC is a big step in the process. The deal puts Stats’ SportVU cameras in every NBA arena and makes the information they collect available to you via NBA.com, NBA TV and the NBA Game Time app.

So what kind of information is that?

The SportVU cameras track every player and the basketball 25 times a second. The data the cameras collect can tell how fast a player moves, how close he was defended on a shot, how many times he dribbled and a plethora of other fascinating nuggets.

Before, you had to break down the film to figure out how whether a shot was contested or not. Now, SportVU can tell you right away. And it can tell you who was the guy contesting the shot.

No single stat or number exists that’s going to tell you all you need to know about a player. Everything must be taken in context and the more information you have, the better argument you can make. Well, SportVU is a lot of information.

All of the above is just the tip of the iceberg. If it can be tracked, it can be quantified.

For passing, they measure things like total passes per game, hockey assists, assists that lead to free-throws as well as the stats mentioned above.

There have been 7.5 FGA at the rim per game with 6.0 makes against DJ. Opponents are shooting 80%.

DJ has had 19 rebound chances (within 3.5 ft of a rebound) per game and has grabbed the rebound 14 times or in 73.7% of possible opportunities. DJ averages 7.5 contested (when opponent is within 3.5 ft of rebound) rebounds per game and 6.5 uncontested rebounds per game. His contested rebound percentage 53.6%.

Blake has averaged 15 rebound opportunities a game while collecting 8.5 or 56.7%. He has collected 2 contested rebounds per game and 6.5 uncontested. His contested rebound percentage is 23.5%. Joakim Noah is at 26.9% and Dwight is at 19.2%. Kevin Love had 17 rebounds in game 1, 47.1% were contested.

Redick has an eFG% of 72.7% on catch and shoot attempts. Crawford is at 83.3% and Dudley is at 61.1%.
