Andre Drummond is our next Ben Wallace

Post#1 » by ripchard32 » Thu Nov 7, 2013 2:35 pm

I feel like Andre D is like Ben Wallace but more athletic and a better offensive game. He still needs to work on his defense a little bit to be as good as Ben was but he is getting up there and if Monroe can develop a turnaround jumper like Sheed had we could have the 2004 team all over again

He's Ben Wallace but with good hands rather than terrible hands.

Kid could be downright scary if he can at least get his FT% to 50% so we don't have to take him out late in games.

Dre needs a lot more time to learn the nuances of the game. But, he certainly can develop into the impact defender that Wallace was in his prime. They were both physically gifted, great leapers. Drummond has a distinct size advantage that Wallace did not have, and better hands.

But, Wallace was a master of positioning. He knew where to be, and didn't solely rely on his athleticism to get there in time. He was also a lock down defender.

If Dre can at least be Ben Wallace, that would be a god send. He's certainly no slouch now, but you can tell he needs more time on the court to figure things out.

Monroe certainly complains to the refs like Sheed, although so far he hasn't become the magnet for techs that Sheed was. KCP can be like Rip, coming off screens for jumpers, and Jennings is another PG that the original team no longer wanted.

We've all seen the parallels to the 2004 squad.

Rasheed and Monroe are polar opposites as players though.

Monroe plays close to the basket and we'd love for him to develop more of a jump shot. Rasheed loved to play away from the basket and everyone wanted him to take it down low more often.

They were both bad free throw shooters though.

Big Ben was maybe the best help side defender ever to play the game, Dre has a long way to go before he has anywhere the same impact on the defensive end.

^Yeah, there's no doubt about that, though best helpside defender ever is overselling it.

Its something Drummond can work towards though, and he's got the tools to get there.

I expect Andre Drummond to be a more complete player than Ben Wallace. What Wallace did on defense was legendary but Drummond has to develop a superior post game. I like Andre, but being the next Ben Wallace in my eye is not going to be good enough for me.

Keep in mind Ben Wallace was an undrafted 15th man at the end of the Bench who got better each year. By the time he was starting, he was like 26 years old. Hence, Drummond has plenty of time to get better over the next few years.

As much as I admired and respected Big Ben, I don't want Drummond to be "our next Ben Wallace". I don't want to play 4-on-5 on offense. Ben could pass a little, set screens, get offensive rebounds, and occasionally putbacks, but that's it on that end of the floor.

Right now, Drummond IS Ben Wallace on offense, with more potential for lobs and less offensive rebounding, so if he doesn't get beyond that, we've completely failed in developing him. He's also nowhere near Wallace yet on defense, but that's an insanely high standard for a 20-year-old second year player.

I want prime Drummond to be DPOY (similar to Ben, but with more floor coverage), a 15-18 PPG scorer (acceptable post game plus the ultimate garbage/oop man), a league leader in rebounds (around 14) and a leader on the floor for the next great Pistons' teams. That's asking a lot, I know, but Big Ben definitely isn't his absolute ceiling. In another three years (although he can still add things after that), we'll know what we truly have.

Defensively, yes, but Drummond's impact on offense already far exceeds anything we got from Ben on that end, and that's with no plays run for him.

it would be nice if Dre developed anything of an offensive game. Would like to see him develop moves similar to Andrew Bynum but Dre isn't as tall and gets his shot blocked easier against taller opponents.

Drummond will be a great defensive presence, but I don't think he'll ever reach the level that Ben Wallace was at during his peak. Drummond's offense is already better, though. Just having a defensive ability in the near ballpark of Big Ben while continuing to strengthen his offensive repertoire..That's superstar material.

drummond's shoot blocking stats is not that impressive. this season he has blocked 1.3 shoot per game in 37 minutes.

last year, he blocked 1.7 shoot per game before all star in 20 minutes.
and he blocked 1.1 shoot per game after all star in 26 minutes.

his numbers has been declining.
Sorry for my poor english

yes, he's gotten worse since he was inserted into the starting lineup at the end of last season. i must say i'm a bit disappointed in him right now, he really looks exactly like another deandre jordan clone. i dont think he'll ever reach his dwight howard ceiling which really sucks, i had high hopes for him this year
