Kidd on Blatche's Shot Selection

Post#1 » by NyCeEvO » Thu Nov 7, 2013 10:02 pm

Normally I wouldn't put this in its own thread, but this has been such a major point of criticism by Nets fans that I feel it needs its own topic.

I have to agree with Bondy here...Blatche is not Dirk, stop encouraging him!

Like I said before, it's on the coaching staff to instruct him properly. Instead they're encouraging him to be dumb.

The offense would be amazing if Blatche's jumpers are going down. However, Blatche should be looking to score inside the paint coming off the bench instead of hovering on the perimeter. It's also the coaching staff's responsibility to reign him in when he's building a brick house or turning it over by dribbling five times only to lose control of the ball.

I think his outside shooting can actually be an asset, but he needs to either commit to the shot right away or pass the ball. I don't like his indecisiveness.

Also, Kidd is playing him with Lopez much more than PJ did and while that was very successful last season, I think the paint needs to be Brook's, so there isn't much room for Blatche down low.

Between KG, Blatche and Teletovic, none of our PF's are providing a reliable outside shot right now. When they do, we will be in much better shape.

I have no problem with his shot selection or him attempting to be a stretch big man I think it's an asset but I do have a problem with his turnovers on his shots.

He needs to stick to catch and shoot or drive. That's it. All of the over dribbling, behind the back fadeaway nonsense has to stop. He's been called for traveling in every game multiple times.

Also, the weight he added isn't helping him. He actually looks slower. He's never going to be a brusier or a tough big man, he needs go just stick to being 230, slim and quick.

He doesn't even look like he can play high minutes with extra muscle on his frame.

We don't want Blatche to be timid. He needs to be aggressive. So, I don't think it would be wise to bust his chops everytime he takes a bad shot right now, its too early on in the season. If its towards the end of the season and he is still throwing up a lot of crazy shots, then he needs to get reigned in.

His shots are growing pains, let him figure out how to efficiently score with that bench unit.

Kidd must've talked to D'Antoni for "words of wisdom" over the summer.

I don't mind him taking wide open catch and shoot jump shots.

It's the contested fadeaways with time on the shot clock where he deserves to be benched for.

I don't mind if they're open shots, i would rather him not try to take jumpers off the dribble so much though. Basically i would rather just see him dribble less because it makes him turnover prone

but hell if a guy can shoot open jumpers out to midrange like KG level or even knock down the 3, cause teletovic sure as hell isn't knocking em down then perhaps even let the guy start shooting 3's only when hes wide open though ofcourse.

On Kidd's defense Blatche is showing some improvements on shot selection this season. He stopped doing his ridiculous fake out moves and actually trying to play smart basketball.

He needs to stop with the pump fakes, he's not a 6'2 guard who needs to create space with a fake. Just take it up one time and shoot like KG and Dirk do.

Blatche has been awful so far and theres no reason for optimism. Its not just a shooting slump, his finishing ability inside is way worse and his he's gone from a very good offensive rebounder to a below average one.

I actually have more of an issue with Blatche's effort on defense, and he's got so many stupid TOs from trying to do too much offensively. I don't really mind him taking open jumpers. I do mind when he has the open jumper...pump fakes...backs it out...starts doing his And1 Tour audition...and then either takes a terrible shot or turns the ball over.

How many bad TOs has he had already from playing stupid offensive basketball? And his defense has been terrible, much worse than last year, when he was actually solid.

Once again it is more about TO's and defense for me...he has a legit 15-18ft jumper, when taking a good shot (obviously we can talk about shot selection all day)...he appears to be in little more control this year, but if he can stop w/ the unnecessary pump fakes and jab steps and just shoot assertively, he would shoot a higher %...

Exactly. I could care less about the shot selection, just don't give the ball away stupidly and play some defense.

You guys didn't watch him much in Washington I guess. He can be really inefficient if he's allowed to play however he wants. Especially when he started dribbling and fading away.

I would put the limit on 2. He wants to fade in the lane to avoid a block near the rim or in the paint, so be it, but if he is taking fade aways @ 15ft, after the first, if he attempts it again, he should be benched...same goes to over dribbling, after the first, if it happens again, he needs to be benched...

He needs to be on a tight leash, but allowed the freedom on the court to take open 15-18 foot shots and take advantage of his god given talent being an athletic and elusive big man in the paint while not becoming a pump faking jab stepping machine...

We know this, it's no secret...truth, he is still breaking bad habits and I'm confident he'll continue to progress...

Before you want to kill this guy or banish him from the team, think of this...Miami would take him in heart beat.

Though you and I both know his skills and my confidence is higher than maybe some others, he is still proving himself, but that does not mean he shouldn't be benched if he plays outside himself or the team.

I'm not saying get rid of him, I just think they approached and changed his situation for the worst. Those fadeaway mid-range shots and crossover is part of his game and style BUT he limited it last year. He thinks he;s KD or Dirk half of the time. And he's been turning the ball over a lot as well.
