'13-'14 Rookie Discussion Thread #1
NBA.com put up their first rookie ladder: http://www.nba.com/rookie-ladder/
No surprise that MCW was at the top.
What I found interesting was that Boston had two bigs on the list: Faverani & Olynyk

Not that many rookies playing meaningful minutes this year...

I would argue that rookies aren't making much of an impact this year - and that the draft was as weak as advertised.
Also, last year's rookie class was pretty deep.

Zeller with only 3 points and 2 rebounds in 23 minutes against the Chandler-less Knicks. I guess it could take time for him to develop.

I was firmly in the " Just say no" camp. But clearly he is not this bad. Its very early and he is getting off to a bad start. We will see if he can get it going, but I had him back in the pack in Shabbazz territory, not top 3.
I haven't seen him or Zeller play in an actual NBA game yet so hard to comment on what's going on with either. I expect Zeller to be a solid piece in time. I actually liked that last draft class regarding the depth of it. I think there will be lots of useful players that come out of it.
Bennett, I think he is going to have a bumpy road. Being #1 was not the best thing for him. Lots of added pressure comes along with that title. He doesn't strike me as someone who is going to be able to handle that well. Its going to make him press more.
I think players like VO, Burke or Noel would be able to handle it.
Not every player is build mentally to live in those #1 pick shoes.
A Davis was built for it. So was Kyrie and Wall, B Griffin and Rose. Actually, going back over the years, most the #1 picks were player I think could handle it. You gotta go back a few years before you find such a bad #1 pick. Andrea Bargnani, Bogat, Kwame Brown ?
This is smelling like a Kwame pick.

No doubt about that. He's already playing like a max-contract player as a rookie. He's already close to elite.
***(Wall should be given props for having some better-than-good numbers overall in two head-to-head meetings vs MCW. Wall is playing quite well and is an elite player, too--no disrespect to him for talking up MCW.)***
I posted this on MCW, and on the other rookie who I think is tearing it up:
MCW would be the unanimous pick so far for ROTY.
However, Steven Adams currently leads in rookie PER (22.7) and WS/48. (.263)
http://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_2013.htmlSteven Adams had the best game of his young career Friday night, with 17 points on 7-10 shooting, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 30 minutes of action.
The game was Adams' best, but the New Zealand native has been impressive nearly every time he's stepped on the court. He's especially striking when compared to the starter he's backing up, Kendrick Perkins. Perkins has a PER of 5.3 so far this season, per Basketball-Reference, compared to Adams' astonishing 22.7.
Adams is averaging 12.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and more than two blocks per 36 minutes.

Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

If this keeps up, after Drummond last year and Adams this year, neither of whom I was particularly impressed with in college, I need to go back and reevaluate my evaluation skills.

Just sucks we got "Lucky" and moved up in the draft. Could have gotten a good player cheap. What was our slot again ? 7th or 8th?
We could have had our pick of Pope, Burke, MCW, Adams, or Kelly. The top prospects in this draft where scary except for VO who was a lock to be a baller.
As for Adams, it was pretty clear he would be a good NBA player regarding running the floor, rebounding and putting a body on you. And he is built country strong. The question was his offense and how long would it take to come around. But he was on the fast track with improving. And you could tell the pressure of the NBA wasn't going to phase him.
There were a few on here who said take him top 3. But its tough to have a serious debate over that because you know GMs aren't taking players projected to go 10th-14th with the 3rd pick. Its just doesn't happen.
OKC might have just saved Durrent staying there if they found a stud center for 2M a year for the next 3 years and then 3M the following year. That will allow them to do other things will keeping the Durrant, Westbrook and Ibaka show going.

I thought to myself the other day... huh, was Shabazz even drafted in 2013? Is he hurt?
He's not exactly 1 for 21 bad like Bennett but Rick Adelman aside, he's getting zero burn on that Minny team. 4 other small forwards are getting more playing time than he is. Just for laughs, he's averaging 6.5 turnovers per 36. That's almost as funny as AJ Price averaging 7.5 TO/36. 7.5 TO/36 and 0 assists/36.

What's that famous phrase about statistics again?
AJ Price has played 5 minutes total, and has had 1 TO. So yeah, if you extrapolate, his TO rate is huge.
That's like if a 12th man comes in, plays 1 minute and hits 1 free throw, he's averaging 36 PTS/36!!!!!

Maybe now that he no longer has the burden of the carrying around a Jonas brother's backpack, he can get some playing time.
