BJ has Dumars blessing

Post#1 » by wire28 » Tue Nov 12, 2013 6:39 pm

@freepsports: Brandon Jennings says he has Joe Dumars' blessing to go back to being a shoot-first point guard http://t.co/7FOcdSCcQY #pistons

Good or bad?

You know, from what I've watched it looked like Brandon was hesitant on some possessions because of his rep of shoot first. This could be a good thing, as long as it isn't ala Rudy Gay shoot first mentality.

I think that basically means Dumars wants BJ to play the game he played in Milwaukee rather than change his game for this team. Good or bad? It all depends on how often and when BJ's shot fall. I don't really care if we have a pass first PG. Our big men can pass! They proved that to me and I think the majority. I just care that we drain outside shots. It's been pathetic. If it means BJ makes more, so be it. But, in my opinion, I think it's a communication problem rather than decision making.

My suggestion is to start KCP before changing anything. I'm thinking he'll start against GSW tonight. I don't think Chauncey can start again. I think GS is gonna shoot lights out tonight unfortunately. I don't think we'll have a fight in us tonight. The players won't care until the Kings. We'll see what happens.

I agree to an extent. Sometimes, like last night, we need him to take over but I don't want him to become a full time shoot first PG. He needs to pick his spots. I've been pleased with Jennings so far though.

KCP is not a game changer. Lol. Hilarious.

Anyways, as long as Jennings is comfortable, not taking too risky of shots against all odds and not hurting the team more than helping, then go for it.

Curry and Klay are going to set the record for most 3s in an NBA game when we go against them. Mark my words.

If Portland can easily do that to us, there's no reason we won't be even more rained on tonight.

I pray that BJ can stay competitive and KCP get some minutes tonight.

Jennings needs to shoot, he's a good scorer. He needs to learn to be more selective in his shots without throwing his game off. If he continues to shoot 40%, then I have a problem with this. Furthermore, I am concerned that 16 shots a game was Brandon Jennings' idea of being a pass-first PG. (That's what he averaged prior to last night's game.)

Jennings shouldn't look to change his whole game. He should, however, be aware that there is much more talent around him than there was in Milwaukee, and he should be more selective with his shots as a result. He also needs to look for alley-oops more often to take advantage of the size of the Pistons' frontcourt.

Bad.

We need Jennings to get the bigs involved first andforemost, then pick his moments to feed off them to get his. We don't need chucker BJ....we need the balanced PG version of him that allows the game to come to him as far as scoring goes.

I call it 'good'. Let Jennings play his game, and see if he naturally becomes a ball distributor as he builds chemistry and trust with his teammates. Or, determine once and for all that he's a ball hog that isn't conductive towards winning championships.

I understand the perimeter scoring is a joke on this team, so smart defenses are going to put him in situations where just taking a shot is probably the best play.

“But like tonight, I've just got to play basketball. If the shot's there, I'm going to take it. If not, then I'm going to pass it.”

That's a good attitude to have. I don't care if he isn't playing 'pass first', as long as he runs the offense, doesn't take bad shots and doesn't shoot 38FG%

The problem isn't with Jennings taking shots. The guy can score. As long as he's taking good shots, fire away.

The problem is that out starting shooting guard hasn't scored more than 5 points since opening night. He's not cutting it as floor general either and is sporting a near 1-1 turnover ratio. He's #51 in scoring for SG - which ranks hims lower than almost everyone's backup sg. I know he's not playing a ton of minutes, but that is just pathetic.

he was terrible as a shoot first guard, but he really can't do anything else. He's shooting 39% for the season and awful from downtown. His efficiency should average a bit higher due to better long distance shot, but he's more or less on his career averages. he's already shooting more then he did in Milwaukee.
So wtf is he talking about?

Jennings needs to shoot, he's a good scorer

I'd say he's a willing scorer. When his shot is falling, he's hard to stop. But that doesn't really happen all to often.

Jennings has had some terrible shot selection and his shooting percentages back that up. TAKE SMART SHOTS BECAUSE A BAD SHOT IS AS BAD AS A TURNOVER. It's basketball 101, something Cheeks apparently hasn't emphasized.

"Jennings has had some terrible shot selection and his shooting percentages back that up. "

Jennings certainly took a ton of bad shots over the years, but he really isn't taking a bunch as a piston. He's probably had more bad looking driving attempts than bad looking jumpers. He hasn't quite figured out how to deal with teams packing in the paint against our big frontline and is running into second and third defenders when he gets into the paint. He's either putting up contested runners or kicking to smith on the perimeter.

Again though, our starting "shooting" guard put up 0 points last night. Teams are going to sag on us from the start. If we are getting zero outside shooting from the starting 2 guard and then go to stuckey and get zero outside shooting, we are in for a bunch of ugly games. We'll just see 5 guys crowding the paint daring jennings and smith to shoot jumpers or drive into trees.

Well, Billups and KCP are shooting like crap and are both unreliable as scorers.

This is really stupid... After he hits 21 and 11, you tell him to get selfish... When you have 3 all-star potential bigs.

This stupidity is starting to annoy me, now I can see clearly that it comes directly from Joe.
We pick the free agent that makes bad shots vs Iguodala.

We pick the coach that makes the un smartest rotation decisions, like playing 4 pgs

Now our PG wants to play smart but we tell him go back to your dumb ways.

Then I see this - http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/23 ... g-Playoffs

IGGY COURTED THE WARRIORS WHILE HE WAS IN THE PLAYOFFS WITH DENVER!

That's amazing and should put the teams in notice. Smart players will gravitate to smart organizations! It would be a crying shame to waste Drummond and Monroes talent this year, even worse to lose the better players because of consistently dumb decision making.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

I liked this team better when Jennings was out, his chucking ways are killing the team morale. why are you going to bust your ass on D, when you know Jennings or Smith are just going to waste the next possession by chucking up a garbage shot.
