Good player. A little slow on rotations, but otherwise very solid. I hope we resign him.

I liked what I saw tonight. The volleyball passes & controlled tips were impressive. He looked longer than usual tonight. I think he will help with the spacing & at some point Nene will be able to feast on power forwards bc of him, though that didn't work out well tonight.

Starting lineup: Wall-Beal-Ariza-Nene-Gortat = 2-0
Bench is another story...

He's a good player. Good trade by Ernie. Hopefully we can keep him without paying too much though considering how even bad Cs can get paid.....
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

I think it's still a terrible trade and I've seen nothing to prove anything different. Mortgaging the future for journeyman rent-a-center isn't my idea of a good trade. And good luck on EG not paying him too much. When does that ever happen?

Is there anyone EG WON'T overpay to keep?

Gortat does look a bit clumsy at times. I will need to see more of him but i am starting to think he might not be as good as i expected him to be.

Right now? i don't think so.

But if EG resigns him this summer? Yes he will be overpaid. EG overpays routinely when he resigns someone.

Let's say you're GM. How much will you offer next summer to keep Gortat in the roster? 10-14 mln per year?

The important decision is whether or not to try to resign him. That is an open question for me. I am not convinced that it would be the best strategy. Sometimes it is better to let a guy walk for nothing rather than overpay to keep him. See Detroit and Ben Wallace.

However if EG is still on the job he will surely try to resign him and i bet it takes at least 4 yr 10 mill to resign him. My guess is that he gets $12 million/yr from someone.

Ignoring Gortat's production for a minute, I think the deal essentially needs to be evaluated on the basis of whether resigning him the offseason is going to happen and under which conditions.

Gortat will be 30 in February, which likely means that he will seek a deal that's at minimum 3 to 4 years.

Given the rate at which bigs are now being paid at in this league, it's not inconceivable to assume that he will seek a deal worth $8.5 to $10.5 million, and that there will be teams that are going to offer that sort of salary.

To me such a deal would be too long and too rich, and I certainly don't consider Gortat the kind of player it's worth maxing the cap out for when you have somebody like Monroe available in that same free agency class.

That doesn't mean that Grunfeld wouldn't go that route and frankly, having seen Grunfeld operate here for a decade, that's exactly the sort of deal he would offer under the guise of continuity, and of course to justify his panic trade to begin with.

The way I see it it's like this. If Gortat walks, this deal is yet another Grunfeld blunder, and if he gets resigned it's more of the same by the worst GM of this millennium.

The Gortat trade seems like lose lose proposition, but it does have the potential to put fans into the seats this season, so I'm sure Leonsis loves it.

I think you're underestimating how much Gortat's next contract will be. I think he re-signs for 4 years and $48-50 million.

Which only serves to drive that point home more.

Just an awful trade, even more so if the Wizards somehow manage stumble into the playoffs.

Currently? Absolutely not. He's actually been very underpaid based on what he did during this contract. He's a huge bargain at 7.8 million per.

He's worth 10 to 11 million per year. That's probably low even.
