Re: Tankapalooza: 2014 Draft Thread
Everyone gets caught up in "elite" this, "star prospect" that, and it always ends up the same.
Not EVERYONE can be great. That has never happened. Even out of the best of the best prospects, at least one will bust.

You wouldn't trade back a from 4-6 for 7-9 and another first? The draft is top heavy with three elite guys then a crap shoot on the other guys whom will all be good at least through the top 8-10
There are likely six elite guys (Wiggins, Randle, Parker, Exum, Smart, Gordon) and after that it might drop off quite a bit. Maybe if a team isn't high on Gordon and already has a pg for the future would rather trade down, but that is probably the best bet. And in that case, we already have a pg for the future (unless we wanted to think about drafting Smart or Exum and possibly trade Bledsoe for other assets) or if we were especially high on Gordon (moreso than whoever holds that pick).
Teams just don't generally trade out of the top 5, and in this draft, I would guess that would even be less likely. And if we were going to move up, it would probably cost us the Wiz pick (assuming it is mid teens) and our own pick...we wouldn't be able to do it with a pick in the 20s. We could possibly trade like the 11th and 16th pick to move up to 8 or 9 if we wanted.
Didn't Love and Mayo get exchanged?
Yeah, and so did Webber and Hardaway. It happens, but that usually happens when you like a guy you can get at the later pick just as much (and usually more) than the guy that will go earlier, so you agree to swap draft picks IF both players are there when the teams pick, and you get an extra asset out of it.
So depending on what teams are drafting where, and what team needs each of those teams have, they could trade down. Unfortunately, I think the best chance of this happening is if the premier prospects are gone, except for Exum and Smart, so a team that already has a pg might consider trading down. But in that case, would we even want to trade up to that spot and take another pg?

And the most lopsided top 10 draft pick trade of all time... Dirk for Robert Tractor Trailor.

I would bet that 1-2 of these players remain in school.

Highly doubt it. Maybe Exum stays overseas for a year.

There is more. Vlade Divac for Kobe
Penny Hardaway and three future firsts for Chris Webber.
Teams have been successful drafting raw players and developing them. The Pacers have to be considered contenders this year and they drafted Paul George 10th and Hibbert 17th.

Divac was already in the league for a couple of years at the time he was traded for Kobe.

Longer than a couple of years... He was drafted 1989 right.... I recall watching him in the playoffs and finals when I was a kid or kiddish anyways.

The Lakers traded up in the draft to get the player they wanted. I thought that trading up to get a higher pick was the point of the examples here.

No, the thread was draft day trades one player picked for another on draft day. You were right about Hardaway and Weber.

I certainly thought this line of discussion was about moving up in the draft and was prompted by this statement:

I mentioned several posts ago about packaging picks to get 1 or 2 good players, this certainly might include trading players and/or trading picks for young players. That particular deal was monumental in that the Lakers not only got Kobe, they free up salary owed Divac and were able to sign Shaq.

The following were listed as draft day trades. Which of the following is not like the other?
Didn't Love and Mayo get exchanged?
Yeah, and so did Webber and Hardaway.
LMA and Tyrus Thomas
Pippen and Polynice
Dirk for Robert Tractor Trailor
Carter and Jamison
Roy and Foye
Marbury and Ray Allen too.
Vlade Divac for Kobe

It only happened because Kobe refused to play for Charlotte. IIRC, he would ONLY play for the Lakers, so any team drafting him had to only do so if they felt they could pry a good vet in a trade with the Lakers. That's the primary reason he slipped so far...no one wanted to deal with it.
