Team/Player Stats Discussion
The Wizards are number 1 in 3s made per game at 11.4. They are 6th in 3 point percentage at 41.5%. Yet even with the great 3 point shooting they are 2-5. What happens if they cool off from 3?
Ranking 23rd in defense and 26th in rebound rate is not the road to success.
EDIT: using this thread to start keep a record of WizD's sigs. If anyone remembers previous sigs please share because they were classic.

there are other factors as well. just a few years ago the Redskins were top team in defense, yet had a bad season overall.
thats a good example.

Re: Team/Player Stats Discussion
They're clearly making it a point to shoot more threes. They're now 2nd in the league in 3pt attempt rate (3pt attempts divided by FGA) behind only Houston. Shooting more threes is a good strategy, but they're near the bottom in 2pt FG%, where two-thirds of their FGA are coming. The ideal shot distribution would be to have most shots coming at-rim or from 3pt range, which are the highest yield shots in terms of generating points. That's because at-rim shots go in more often, and 3pt shots convert at about the same rate as shots from 3-feet out to the 3pt line, but count for an extra point.
They're doing okay controlling turnovers, but they've joined the trend of ignoring offensive rebounding and they're not getting to the FT line very often. Houston, by contrast, leads the league in 3pt attempt rate AND in FTM/FGA (the 4-factors measure DeanO introduced lo those many years ago).
Bigger problem is defense, though. They're 3rd worst so far in defensive efg, which is pretty much all you need to know about their defense. They're getting a fairly high opponent turnover rate, BUT opponent turnovers don't correlate all that well with having a good defense. They're defensive rebounding is bad (tied for 20th), but would be acceptable if they made the other team miss shots.

I don't have a problem with them taking a lot of 3s. But as you said they still need to attack the basket. At least Nene did get to the line a lot last night. Maybe they got the memo.
But their defense last night was just a joke. Even with the starters in Daly was getting layup after layup.

Wizards are 25th in points in the paint scoring
http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/po ... t-per-game
and 28th in points in the paint defense
http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/op ... t-per-game
Might have to get the tank rolling soon.

What do you think happens if they cool off from three...
I suggested that a reduction in attempts, not a cool-off, results in better defensive effort.

I actually liked much of what I saw from the Wizards offensively in the Dallas game. Wall was penetrating and Nene was getting to the line. Dallas was clearly focusing on taking away 3-pt attempts from Beal and Webster and we adjusted well. The problem was that the defense was really bad. It also would have been nice if Beal and Webster combined to go 2-5 rather than 0-5 from 3-point range. Nene hitting a free throw wouldn't hurt either.

Whenever i see him take a long pullup 2 off the dribble with nobody else touching the ball i feel like i just saw a picture of the Luvabulls.

Wall and Beal are both shooting 39% from 2 point range. They are taking only a combined 7.5 foul shots a game in a combined 76 minutes per game. Something has to change here.

Wizards shooting a league low, 68.8FT%. Could have been 4-5 if we had a slightly better FT%.

Wizards are 5th in fast break points per game at 17.9ppg.
This is very surprising for me, i thought wizards would be much lower.

First look at my stat (PPA) over at the blog.
Wizards record in the first 9 games of the season during Grunfeld's tenure: 30-69. Average start to the season under Grunfeld's direction: 2.7-6.3.

The sad part is that is only 10% worse than his overall winning percentage. It blows my mind that this guy gets paid to make decisions about basketball.
LOL @ your picture. Harrington has actually had some hot shooting and is just at 6. Beal's rebounding, turnovers and 2 point shooting definitely need to improve.

Re: Team/Player Stats Discussion
Here's Al Harrington so far this year: good 3pt shooting, but terrible from 2pt range. Zero offensive rebounds (literally zero). He's managed 10 defensive rebounds...in 130 total minutes. Even Seraphin and Maynor have managed better per minute defensive rebounding rates (though just barely). 18% of Harrington's possessions have been turnovers. And oh yeah, he fouls a lot.

And they typically finish off seasons well enough to say - See, we're on the right track. We're improving blablabla. But really those finishes were against teams playing out the string mostly with depleted rosters looking past the Zards.

Well...sorta. Couldn't figure out in 30 seconds or less at b-r how to get the team's record in the least 9 games, so I just grabbed the April record. With Grunfeld at the helm, the Wizards April record: 41-55. That's a .427 winning percentage. The team's overall winning percentage during those years: .387. So, the team has been better late in seasons, but they've still been just a 35-win team.
