Should Greg Monroe Be Traded?

Post#1 » by StickAndMove » Mon Nov 18, 2013 10:46 pm

There's been a lot of talk about potential trades involving Moose lately. I want to know how many agree that it's best to deal him.

To be clear, I'm asking your opinion as far as what should happen, not what will happen.

I dont want Moose to be traded. I'd rather look for potential Smoove takers before I would consider dealing Moose.

I am not sure at this point, If we do trade moose, then it better be for substantial return and the idea of moving josh to PF. Also if we do trade him, we should also get a backup center as moose has a ton of utility on this team. i am all for keeping moose, however his lack of a consistent jump shot in his 4th year is still concerning for me and it seems like he has not progressed with it

Yes.

As much as I like Monroe he is not worth a max contract, which is what he'll likely command. There isn't going to be a home town discount and at least 1-2 other clubs will be looking to throw big money at him. Better to move him now and get some value in return, rather than overpay to keep him or risk losing him for nothing.

I don't like it. It's not ideal. But it's pragmatic. Roster balance is important and should be addressed with this type of move, but wouldn't be my primary motivation.

It would have to be the right deal, and I do have a hard time believing we could get good value for him. But if you can move him and put Smith permanently at the 4 next to Drummond, while balancing the roster, than you have to strongly consider it. Especially given the impending financial commitments that loom.

tldr; Doubtful you get the right value, but definitely movable for the right price

Yes....for the right value. Josh Smith should be the PF if Monroe were to be traded.

I voted no.

He'll get overpaid, but he and drummond are the only reasons why this team has a chance of ever being good.
Unless a team is willing to over pay drastically in a trade, he shouldn't be traded.

Trade him to get high up in the 2014 draft and get a franchise scoring SF.

Sadly, I'm on the "yes" side now. Our defense is terrible with Smith 3/Moose 4, and while I think it will get substantially better over time, I'm not sure it'll ever be good this way.

We can establish an identity as a running, athletic team with Jennings/KCP/??/Smith/Drummond. That doesn't work with Monroe, who is a plodder and will only become more of a plodder as time passes. We'll greatly miss his high/low post ability, but Drummond needs to become a low post threat anyway.

The only potential franchise SFs in this draft look to be Parker/Wiggins. Nobody will give up a chance to draft either of them for Monroe.

I'm with ajax. If the right trade comes along, then sure.

Monroe's a 3rd best player on a championship team, not a franchise cornerstone. No reason it shouldn't be considered.

Even with the additions of Smith and Jennings and a sophomore Drummond- Monroe is still this teams best player. So no, we shouldn't trade him. And should only consider it if a superstar player is coming back. Considering what guys like Sanders and Favors commanded- Monroe is worth a 4 year max contract.

I don't think its all Monroe's fault that we are the worst defense in the league, but its hard to see us ever becoming the best defense in the league WITH him.

Unless you have a superstar scorer (and today you need multiple ones), you need to be an elite defense. So for us to not have even one superstar scorer, and have the worst defense in the league, that's a combo that's never going to get us anywhere.

As important as it is to have a low post scoring big man, its even more important to have a great defense, so no matter how great Moose is in the post, if he is preventing us from ever having a consistently great defense, then yes he probably needs to be traded eventually this year.

If he had more years left on his deal I would say keep him and see if he can improve his D, but after 4 years and only showing sparse improvement here and there on that end, I don't think its wise to commit another 4 years to him at a high price.

He's not untouchable, but I'd rather have him on a max contract than a lot of the offers the Pistons would likely get. Al Jefferson was dealt on a big deal, Moose could still be traded in a season (albeit for less).

He IS worth that much based on league standards and what other teams, who have a need up front, will be willing to pay. However, we don't have a need up front, so he is not worth that much to us. If we don't sign him, we will be just fine inside with Dre and Smith.

We need to spend that money on help defensively and/or a superstar scorer, and he's obviously not going to provide either.

Josh Smith and Jennings both made the playoffs last year and they were both argubly the best players on their teams, now they team up with Monroe and it looks like we will again struggle to make the playoffs. Have we really improved as a team since Monroe has been here? If not, whats the point of signing him long term for big money?

I think monroe actually helps dre. Monroe take pressure off drummond on the offensive end and gives him easy buckets with his passing from the post.
He also backs him up at the C which takes pressure off drummond.

To me they compliment eachother well.
