I think the logic there is that despite interference, if the ball was going to be picked off anyway, the interference is irrelevant.

I guess the debate can be whether or not Gronk could have not only prevented the INT, but made the catch as well if he hadn't been interfered with...but I think it's pretty clear that he couldn't have made a play, since the ball was underthrown and Gronk was still moving away from the ball when it was intercepted.

But I still think Gronk could have made it at least a much tougher decision for the refs if he sold the interference better, instead of just standing there.

Yeah, looking back at the play, you're right and the correct call was made. However, the reason Gronk doesn't fight back towards the ball is that there's incidental contact with Addison, and Gronk loses his footing. It's hard enough to stop your momentum without stumbling, but with that additional contact it's impossible, which is why Gronk gave up on the play.

I initially thought that Kuechly caused him to lose his balance, but it's clear that Gronk and Addison's feet just get tangled. I think there would have been a real case for PI if that incidental contact didn't occur.

If the ball would have made it though to Gronk, it would have been a penalty. It was picked off or knocked down before, so it is not. May or may not be a good rule, but per the refs, it is the rule. Like the 'tuck" rule which is a crappy rule. Rules Committee can revisit it in the offseason.

That's definitely not the rule.

I didn't see it live, but the pick up was good considering the rule.

My favorite part of the whole thing, though, is how Gruden/Young/Dilfer fail to recognize that Gronk had absolutely no shot at getting back to that ball. It was tremendously under thrown, get over it. Gronk is 11 feet tall, throw it up and he's bound to have a better shot and draw that flag.

It was flat out a bad call! Then it was the correct call! Heres what happened...

Ref throws flag...

begins to realize the moment is extremely heavy...

has fans and curse words breathing down his neck...

he is right at the back of the endzone...and his back right next to the fans...

realizes he may not make it out to parking lot alive...

then changes his mind. Thereby making it...a correct call.

I thought that was PI too, but the Panthers are/were the better team and deserved the W.

I can only hope RG3 makes the same year 3 jump that Cam Newton has made, as RG3 continues to be inconsistent and at times downright horrendous(that last throw...ugh). But Newton's D is really stepping up.

pretty much. the refs are only human, and as such can't be blamed for their instincts to survive an angry mob of tens of thousands.

replace the refs with cyborgs = problem solved
