Nonsense. Steve Nash is not a NBA starting PG caliber player.
Never was and never will be. That's all there is to it.

That Don Nelson thinks Nash can play is more proof what a bad
judge of talent Nelson really is.

BTW, I said the same thing when Nash was in Phoenix prior to
the trade, so there is no hindsight here.

"I was just at the Galleria and I went out back to call my girl from a pay phone and there hanging out around a phone were Mitch Wiggins, Lewis Lloyd & John Lucas! I asked them what's up and they told me they were waiting for a call. I thought they were straight buggin, hanging out at a pay phone like someone is gonna call them. They show me this fly new device - like, total Star Trek, yo - called a "Beeper." All you do is call someone and enter the digits of the phone from where you're calling. In about 15 minutes that person's "Beeper" is all beepin' showing the digits of the phone you entered...THEN THEY CALL YOU BACK!!! I just went to the Galleria to get some new Converse All-Stars...little did I know I was taking a trip into the future! Anyway, the phone rings and the guys find out where they need to meet their friend for the "hook-up." Man...between these three, Sampson and that Akeem kid they're gonna win at LEAST 5 championships!"

Piggy backing on this with another line from the thread:

Enough said.
This begs the question. Has Nelson made any good deals since getting the
reigns in Dallas? Kidd trade, Bradley trade, Mashburn trade, Nash trade,
ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch. If Nowitski turns into a bust he'll have a clean
sweep.

It's rather insane just how wrong that statement proves for posterity.

As someone who was posting on Usenet (Rec.Sport.Basketball.Pro) back in the early-to-mid 1990's (I started posting on there in like 1994 -- yes, I'm old), I can attest to the fact that trolling, flaming, baiting and the like were in full swing then.

If memory serves correctly, there were several Seattle Supersonics fans who were particularly vociferous in their support of their team and equally dismissive of their rivals. Which was probably why the outcome of the 1994 playoff series between the Sonics (#1) and Nuggets (#8) was wildly celebrated on that board, if I remember right.

Someone asked earlier in the thread about reaction to the "Starks blocked by Hakeem (in the 1994 Finals)" and "Starks shoots 2-18 in the 1994 Finals." This thread was mostly about that subject:

http://bit.ly/1dWjqvt

You may have to click on each entry on that page (each line) to read the post for that line. It's marking them as "read" by me, which means the post is collapsed. Not sure if this will happen to others or not. The thread starts from the top, I believe, and reads down.

I don't know if there was a "Knicks board" at that time, but there may have been. There were "boards" for teams, but many people went to the "main board" of Rec.Sport.Basketball.Pro also. So that thread above contains both Knicks fans, as well as fans of other teams (including myself).

Also, I don't think you could be banned back then. The best option was something which I think was called a "kill file," which I believe is something along the lines of an "ignore" function on some message boards today.

Because I don't think you could get banned back then, people would say some pretty outrageous things if I remember right.

Two issues that I recall from 1994 that came up, just in looking at my own posts from that time, were:

1. Calvin Murphy whining because someone was approaching one of his records (dont remember which one)

2. Shaq whining because David Robinson beat him for the scoring title by putting up like 71 against the Clips on the final day of the season

All the same kinds of arguments, and tactics, that you see now were in full bloom back then, too. People trying to protect "their guy," slam the new guy, put down the rival team, etc.

Same stuff, different decade. :)

Two other things about the 1980's and 1990's (especially early 1990's) Usenet groups:

1. The internet was extremely limited then. Most of the people posting were either college students or people who worked at colleges. So, the posting community was much less. The first time I remember this really getting broken up was when the ClutchFans site debuted for Houston Rockets fans in 1996. This may have been about the time when the internet was really starting to expand to the average consumer more.

2. I remember in reading old posts from then that in 1994, still, all of the playoffs weren't covered in the USA. Or at least the Suns-Rockets games, or at least one of them, was like PPV-only in Phoenix (and maybe elsewhere). Even in 1994, the NBA still did not have the kind of mega-popularity it does now. Things have changed a ton in the last 20-30 years.

Even more Knick threads since they were actually very good in the 90s.

Christopher Nanos
2/6/97

"I'm sorry but Michael Jordan is the most overrated player in the NBA. So
what if he leads the league in scoring. He only does so because he takes
so many damn shots. Hell, if I took thirty shots a game, even I might be
able to shoot in double digits. His field goal percentage is very similar
to many other big names in the NBA. I'm not saying that he is not a
superstar, but to place him on a pedastal as possibly the greatest to play
the game is going too far. Peace, and I'm out."

This guy sounds like a present day Realgm poster

Well if we can complain on that game I wouldn't go there. I'd go aobut the 5 point stolen from us: 3 pointer from Eisley that was good and didn't count, 2 points by Ron Harper way after the 24 second violation that counted.
