Cashman asked about Brandon Phillips? Oh hell no!
Word is Cashman was interested in trading for 32-year old 2B Brandon Phillips who earns 10M a season but the Reds were asking for too much. Cano who earned $14M last season is set to earn even more coin. Phillips is a Gold Glove winner who hit .261 with 18 homers and 103 RBIs. Doesn't sound like a great plan to get older but cheaper...at the cost of production.

It's called creating leverage. Just like we want Omar Infante.
Get a clue.

Who said the Yankees didn't have leverage?
I don't want Phillips, but it's better then signing Cano to 30 Mil per year. If Cano gets down to that 17-22 per yr range he'll stay, otherwise I think Cash-man won't be signing him.
Also, 32 vs 31 really isnt much of an age difference......

It's leverage IF the player is even remotely in the stratosphere as the player they're attempting to bargain down. It's an INSULT (see Pettitte bolting to Houston) if the GM doesn't tread carefully, right Cash?
We ALL remember Jeff Weaver was supposed to replace Andy Pettitte. How did that work out? SAME GM btw.
With 50 million and 4 years remaining on Phillips who was terrible last season, where is this leverage?
That's a clue for FREE btw.

I would rather pay 50/4 for phillips then 300/10 or even 250/8 for cano.

You've got the Andy thing all wrong. Cash wanted him but Andy wanted a charm offensive. Cashman told Andy to find a deal and the Yankees would beat it rather than offering him a good contract and fawning over what he meant to the franchise. Houston bowled him over with affection and they got him playing the close to home and hero cards. It was never about the money.

Yanks turned down a Phillips for Gardner swap. At least Csahman got this one right.

Yeah that was one of those moves that, without thinking, seems like a move to do but that, once you thought about it, scares the bejesus out of you and you say no. They are basically talking about trading for the 32 year old baseball version of Stephen Jackson right down to the talent and intensity on the field, but the whacky moaning and complaining about contracts off the field. They really don't need Phillips to be bitching and moaning about his contract for years to come and they certainly don't need to give him a crazy new contract at age 32 and advanced numbers worse than Gardners. With Elsbury, McCann, Beltran, Soriano and Texierra back they have enough offense. Yes Phillips is a Gold Glove 2B but at his age he may have what? 1 left? They can make due with something less expensive.

Looks like Cano didn't buy it....and in the end, neither did Cashman.
