I don't believe in legacy signings. Players are paid a lot of money the years they are great. I don't believe in this we owe so and so player more money for what he has done. If that was the case the Bulls should still be giving MJ a check. If your going to pay Kobe to be the best player in the league then he has to be the best player in the league. If not your pretty much putting Kobe's wallet over the entire franchise.

This isn't baseball where you can give Derek Jeter a contract he can't live up too because what he has done in the past. Despite being paid crazy money in the past as well. In basketball and football you have a cap. You start handing out legacy deals your on the road to franchise disaster.

Just one more reason why Dwight made the right decision to bolt LA. The Lakers have tied themselves to Kobe more than any time in there history to one player. Don't want to sound like Nelly but he is the Lakers spoiled child and they continue to cater to whatever he demands. I heard the talk that Kobe would take a Duncan like deal. KG like deal. I had a feeling though Kobe would do what Kobe does. Send a message in his weird strange way. This message is that you guys have Lebron, Dwight, Durant, Harden, Paul ahead of Kobe on the top player list. I"m at the top of the highest paid list. IMO the Lakers have just signed up for bad to mediocre win loss records and the only reason to watch Laker games for the next 3 years will be see if Kobe can chuck up enough shots to catch Jabbar.

Kobe signed a $48 million extension, and the Lakers just signed a $250 million extension.

Doesn't sound like the worse news in the world.

Good business decision, ultimately. Horrible basketball winning decision.

How do you know Kobe demanded this contract and the Lakers weren't the ones who offered it first?

The thing is, people are disappointed because he could have gone on one or two last runs. Build a beautiful squad around you from scratch, go over the top and spend as much as possible. Now you got Kobe for 24 million and Nash (does he retire/buy out whatever). He takes up TOO MUCH money.

Thing is there's no guarantee they would have contended even if he took the discount. Everyone thought they would do something special with Dwight, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Can't criticize Kobe for taking the money the Lakers obviously felt he deserves. For the Lakers, they made a business move a business like themselves can make.

The funny thing is I think the people who are criticizing him now would have been the first to discount his impact if the Lakers actually won the championship with Kobe taking the discount.

It's a respect thing.

I agree looking at it through another angle.

I think the Lakers are acknowledging that they won't be able to compete in the short-term anyways with the likes of Miami, Indiana, OKC, SA etc. running the show. Not a big Kobe fan but still have lots of respect for someone who will have spent his entire 20 year career on 1 team and has accomplished a lot of them too.

The Lakers will still make the $$ either way.

He took this money because he's so competitive and wants to win a championship with a team of low-salary fillers.

Not really. One of the greatest players in NBA history will now retire a Lakers. How can that be bad? It's not a 7 year contract. It's 2 years.

as if there was any doubt yesterday he'd have left the lakers and retired somewhere else

Im sure the Lakers can give Kobe 48m/2yrs without flinching considering their revenue from tv deals. You still gotta construct a roster to compete within the cap though , its not baseball. I guess they know their ceiling.

Great signing for LA. Lakers retain a Top 5 player, and still have cap room and Pau's expiring to play with. I tend to think they're maneuvering for a semi-big trade.

The people knocking this signing are hilarious.

The contract is an example of the Lakers doing things the right way in a business not known for loyalty.
