Who knows, the thing is the ability to recruit two max players. Say Melo and Bosh as an example. Ideally it was going to be Kobe Howard and max player that didnt go as planned

Why would LA give 2 max contracts to Melo/Bosh? All that would do is create screw the cap for 2016 when guys like KD are available.

The whole plan for 2014 was to get Bron. Once Ray Ray hit that shot in game 6, that dream ended for management.

Wow what a **** fail by the Lakers FO. I understand paying your superstar, but Kobe was not going to get 24 million at any other team, even giving him 16-17 million was being generous considering he's old and coming off an injury. I highly doubt any other team in the league was going to give him that.

They've just blown up their plans for the next window of opportunity, not that any superstar was going to sign on to play with Kobe anyway as I highly doubt anyone really likes playing on his team, but now there's a lot less cap space available just to sign all star level guys.

I'm actually just as pissed at Kobe showing that even on his last contract he's not taking a paycut to try and win a couple more titles, his play off the court is just as selfish as his play on the court. This is a bad move by both the Lakers and Bryant.

One of those guys is on a rookie deal and you conveniently let Ginobli & Splitter out of the equation. Well done, you made a point.

Tiago Splitter + Manu Ginobli + Diaw = $21 million

Lebron James = $19 million
Hibbert + Paul George + Lance Stephenson = $18 million

There you go!

The fact that the Lakers didn't amnesty him would have been good faith enough. If they didn't believe he could come back they would just amnesty him and see about making a play in last years free agency. Saying we need to even go further in good faith by adding 2 more years to that 32 is just stupid.

He isn't the only player contracted to the Lakers so it's wrong to imply he alone is responsible for the 80M or whatever the number is. And even if it is 80M, it's not toooo far from what Kobe's making for them.

Maroko wrote:has Kobe ever paid something in L.A ? I mean why does he need all that money ?

Well why does anyone need money? Just because you've got millions, it doesn't mean you stop wanting more. Hell 30M is surely worth more than a stupid ring which he already has 5 of.

I'm not implying he is the reason they are paying the luxury tax. That luxury tax number was based on what it would have been if Dwight had stayed. I'm saying the Lakers passed on the option of amnestying Kobe because of faith in his return and his legacy. When in reality Kobe has no shot at earning his salary for this year. If they amnestied him they could have saved themselves millions of luxury tax dollars. Perhaps kept Dwight. Perhaps been a player in last year free agency. The Lakers are already making sacrifices for Kobe.

I've said this before. You are as a player is determined what your salary slot is. The reality is Kobe Bryant this year makes as much as Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined. He makes as much as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu combined. How can you compete with those franchises when 1 player makes that much more than comparable superstars. Unless you produce at a ridiculous rate the salary numbers on your team are going to killed. The Miami Heat dynasty was created because they took less than what they could. Dwight wanted to get Chris Paul to Houston under the idea they take less money. The reality of the NBA today is individual players control what type of team is put around them buy how much they take of the cap. Under the new CBA its not easy to even get into the luxury tax.

Simply put for the first time since I been a basketball fan and watching the NBA the Lakers are not about winning titles. I don't know what there about but the moves ever since they decided to not bring back Phil Jackson are not about winning.

They just need to put the most slimmed-down set of defensive players around him so that he can jack up 30 shots a game in a quest to defeat Kareem's record. Forget winning, forget the playoffs, that's all out the window at this point, just enjoy Kobe's weird years.

I thought after the new CBA you can't pay a guy 25 million a year? Isn't that why all the max contracts now are all in the 16-18 million range per season?!

It's an extension so the old CBA rules are grandfathered in.

Lakers really bent over backwards for mediocrity for him. But hey, he rakes in 90mil a year for them. Screw winning.

That's called making an assumption and attacking your own assumption in a brutal way, which is the ESPN school of journalism.

Lakers can't get two max players alongside Kobe but it makes it hard to sell a max or near-max player on a team that comprised of Kobe, yourself and bunch of scrubs. Right now the Lakers options for the next couple of years have been severely limited. It's essentially the Kobe show for the next two years. That might be great in the East but in a brutal West conference it will get you an early playoff exit at best.

Lets not act like many Laker fans were hoping that they would see something like Kobe signs for 10 and the Lakers make a run at 2 max players. Either with free agency or the potential with a trade. Not sure its an assumption. I thought they tried to sell Dwight on the idea of him signing and in 2014 him and Kobe recruiting another free agent. Apparently what we learn is the Lakers plan was Dwight and Kobe until Kobe decides to retire.

May be that was always the plan. From every thing I read from the beat reporters close to the management, keeping Kobe as the flag bearer was the only idea on the management's mind irrespective of other things.

I don't necessarily agree with it but its not my team to run.

48 million is quite a bit outrageous amount for an old player coming back from a serious injury. It makes the Lakers desperate, and will certainly prevent them to bring any good free agent any time soon.

It also tells, sadly, Kobe wants to have nothing to do with another ring. He was supposed to sign for half of that (and even less considering his age and injury) to make the Lakers a championship contender again.
