Visual flashback to the good times...

Post#1 » by BattleTested » Tue Nov 26, 2013 10:16 am

I used to be a pretty prominent mix maker. Had to stop because of some personal issues that forced me to move away from home. But I thought these videos might give some of you guys some enjoyment.

2008 Mixes

Backstory: Made in the summer of 08, right after the loss to Boston. Shaq just went on his tirade against Kobe and I wanted to show how I felt their legacies would ultimately end up. This one sort of worked out in our favor. So here's how one Lakers fan dealt with the ultimate failure of that Finals and coped with his longstanding bitterness towards Shaq. Hopefully you guys will get some of the references (i.e. "there ain't no reason why I be buying expensive chains" with a clip of Vanessa.) Set to Public Service Announcement by Jay-Z.

Backstory: This video heavily details the Celtics-Lakers tensions that existed at this point. This was a preview for that Christmas day rematch that LA went on to win. I was pretty obsessed with the Celtics as a (nearly) lifelong Lakers fan whose first taste of the rivalry ended in such humiliation. This video will, hopefully, show how important it was for us to eventually beat Boston. That 09 title was obviously very satisfying, but it wasn't until we beat Boston the next year that we really felt like champions. That was when Kobe and Phil (and Pau's) legacies as legendary Lakers was truly secure. Set to Daniel Day Lewis and Al Pacino speaking over one of the songs from There Will Be Blood.

Backstory: Again, this one is pre 08-09 season. Even though nothing was guaranteed and that turned out to be an extremely hard fought ring, I think videos like this make the optimism that rose from the ashes of that 08 season shine through. We forget because of injuries and free agency mishaps but we were incredibly excited about Bynum and Ariza at that point. Hopefully this brings you to back to that point when we knew we were watching a team that was going to play until June, a team that was going to compete for titles year in and year out. Set to Ratatat's remix of Kanye West's Diamonds.

Backstory: Speaking of Bynum, who amongst us didn't hype up Bynum in 2008? He burst onto the scene as a legitimate 2-way big and the best non-Kobe player we had since Shaq. Then he got hurt, and Pau came so we kind of forgot about the guy. But when Boston was destroying us inside and challenging the team's collective manhood, we truly missed Bynum. At that point, he became a savior. We didn't envision Pau and Odom toughening up, we just thought Bynum would show up and save the day. If you told me we were going to win the next 2 titles in late June of 08 I would've believed you until you let me know Bynum was going to average 6/4 and 9/7 in those two playoffs. That was absolutely unfathomable at that point. Bynum was basically the next great Lakers big man, a guy who had encountered a freak injury but ultimately was our 2nd option for the future. Pau was really good, but we had serious doubts after he punked out in the WCF and the Finals. He just wasn't tough enough. Clearly, we were completely wrong. Odom and Gasol killed it from October of '08 to April of '11 while Bynum parked in handicapped spots and got hurt every year. This video shows the unreasonable expectations we had of Andrew Bynum at that time. Set to Sky is the Limit by Lil Wayne.

Lakers Through History

Backstory: Just a highlight mix chronicling the 80's, 90's, and 00's for the Lakers. 30 years where they won 10 championships and saw 16 Finals. Some great moments you may have forgotten (Harper's trash talk and GW sequence in G3 vs Portland in our 2000 title run, Fisher's trash talk and dagger vs Boston in 2010 along with some Ray Allen ownage, multiple James Worthy plays from G7 in 88, plus all the great moments you would expect.) This should bring up some good memories for long-timers. Set to Linguistics by Cunninlynguists.

Backstory: Mix about the 2002 playoff run. I mixed it to 3-peat by Lil Wayne (when he was still decent) so you can synch it up with that song. Youtube muted the audio and made me pick some song out of their copyrighted track list. Fortunately they had another one that fit the tempo and didn't take away too much from the mix. If you wanna relive some of the moments of the 3rd championship in chronological order, this 3 and a half minute video will allow you to do so. Some of the negative moments (during the WCF) might seem strange without the original music, but anyone who experienced that series understands the intent in showing how close Sacramento came to dethroning us. Honestly, as much as people talk about how close the Spurs were vs. Miami, we stole 3 of our 4 wins in that series. They were clearly more talented and probably a better team, but we had the experience and the balls to get the job done while they were air balling game winners and missing clutch free throws. Original video made it clear that was the real Finals. But this one will still fuel the nostalgia for those of us who remember that historic battle.

Backstory: This was around the time I stopped hating Shaq (since we were successful.) With Bynum's impending return I figured it was a good time to make an ode to the Kobe and Shaq years. Set to It's Been a While by Staind and Savior by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Kobe's Legacy

Backstory: Just Kobe killing the Jazz. Funny thing is this is before the 09 and 10 playoffs when the Lakers beat the Jazz in 8 of 9 postseason match ups (which saw 4 or 5 classic Kobe performances.) I just thought it was interesting how his career started off failing in Utah and then he basically just murdered them for like a decade plus. Set to Praise You by Fatboy Slim.

Backstory: This video basically chronicles how Kobe Bryant is the best tough-shot-maker in NBA history. I meant for it to be a series (as the title would suggest) but by this time I was basically done with mix-making. I think it's still an enjoyable watch if you're looking for a 4:30 minute example of the talent dude has for making something out of nothing. Set to the instrumental of Acid Raindrops by People Under the Stairs.

Backstory: Last video I finished before I left. Basically just a video of Kobe setting the MSG record by dropping 61 in New York. Set to New York State of Mind by Nas.

So there's 10 videos that should spark some interest for my fellow die hards. I'm thinking of booting up the old Dell laptop and making a couple more mixes in honor of this very entertaining Lakers squad, so I've been getting nostalgic about what used to be one of my favorite hobbies. To be honest, I mainly did this for my own enjoyment, but it always made me really happy to hear that other Lakers fan liked my work.

Hopefully some of these mixes are able to take you guys down memory lane.
Lakers fan since 99.
