Matt Garza (why not Jays?)

Post#1 » by number15 » Tue Nov 26, 2013 10:35 pm

last season, if rumors are true, Jays considered trading a healthy package of prospects for Matt Garza with Chicago. Likely Sanchez involved.

now he is a FA and will cost nothing.... nothing but a heavy price tag. a price tag theyed have to pay anyway if they traded for him.

........ now however, AA is moving away from Garza so he can nab Samardzija for the CUBS.... for Aaron Sanchez + more as rumored.

this sounds stupid. just pay they extra few million to Garza and walk away.

think how certain teams manage to improve without cleaning out the farm. they sign smart FA deals. like Boston last year. and NYY every year.

wouldnt it be just great if Syndergaard, Sanchez are future aces for a decade while Jays can just look at remember what could have been.

Garza is a somewhat-above-average, but not great, pitcher who has shipped home runs by the bucketload in the AL. Is that worth the $15m a year that he is likely to receive?

Garza is at best a #3 starter

I don't see him as the type of difference-maker that's going to get this team into playoffs next season

Garza is above average. He is an ideal #2 or #3 pitcher in a rotation. Yeh 15 million is an over payment but if you can get it on a shorter term, its fine.

im trying to say, why was AA gonna trade for him if he wont even outright sign him. i doubt they were gonna ship prospects out to get Garza as a rental on a bad team. just makes no sense, considering they are rumored to send Sanchez plus more for the other guy.

You can't. As a durable pitcher in his early 30s, he'll almost certainly receive four years or more.

Damned if I know why he was exploring a trade. Doesn't make signing him a good idea, though...there isn't a more overpriced segment of the market than those mid-rotation starters.

well Jays are rumored to go after Ricky Nolasco.

i think jays are better off letting their prospects battle it out for tge 5th spot.

Hutcheson, Stroman etc..

I think Ubaldo is the best option. Ground ball pitcher. Stays healthy. Those are assets on the Jays. Also, the Jays do not have to give up a first rounder for him, though many other teams would have to do so, which may lower his value. Then, let the rest of the Jays fight for the fifth spot. Surely one of Hutch, Drabek, Nolin, Redmond, Romero, Rogers, etc... will have a good showing. They can't all suck at the same time, can they?
