NBA.com Player Highlights

Post#1 » by scooper1030 » Mon Nov 25, 2013 8:08 pm

Just wanted to say that in case you don't know, you can now access all of the player highlights (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) from any NBA player after any game on NBA.com. This is, in my opinion, a fantastic advancement for the NBA, as fans now have the ability to watch more game footage than ever before and should be more knowledgeable as a result.

Also, as a side note, this means I'm going to stop making videos after each game. I already have a couple of YouTube channels to compete with for those highlight videos, and now I definitely can't compete with NBA.com. I'll still be making other Suns videos from time to time, so don't unsubscribe yet!

It's not just highlights... it's literally EVERYTHING every player does in EVERY game. It's kind of ridiculous. You can watch a player shoot 17 misses in a Gayme (see what I did there?).

Does it really show all their field goal attempts?

I thought it was just makes.

It depends which stat you click on... if you click FGM it will be the makes, but if you click on FGA it will show all the player's shots. You can also see every rebound, steal, assist, etc... that a player has.

There's even video for FTA, so you can watch all of Dwight Howard's knee-slappers.

You can also watch turnovers, which is helpful. OF COURSE, Stern has made a conscious effort to not have video of personal fouls... That would be too much evidence against the precious refs that control most games.

Great stuff. You can watch fouls too. Even jump balls. There are about 500 "events" you can watch in a game if you go to play-by-play page.

Suns-Magic game for example: http://stats.nba.com/gameDetail.html?Ga ... playbyplay

haha... some of it is ridiculous... you can watch them call timeouts. Why?! Also, if you have the patience, you can basically watch the entire game replayed through those videos. If you could make a playlist it would be easy. I wonder how long it will be until they start charging money for these videos. They must be hell on their servers.

I wonder if they have some sort of automated program that does most of the work for this or if they hired a huuuuge staff that focuses on cutting the footage up

I'm thinking it's a program built into their system cause some of the clips are unnecessarily long. Probably something when the stat keepers track the stat?

Scooper, these aren't really highlights. Its just a play by play. If I want to see how Dragic did only instead of seeing everything else, then I have to carefully scroll through the whole page looking for Dragic's pts and then click on every single seperate video to watch it.

It would be very long and time consuming as opposed to just watching one video of all of Dragic's highlights.

If your tired from it I completely understand but I don't think this new NBA.com stats thing should discourage you from putting up the wonderful highlights you did on the other thread.

You don't have to search play by play. You can go to the boxscore and click on the stat you'd like to see. For example if you click on his FGA you'll watch videos of all his field goal attempts.

True but like a poster above said the clips are longer than they need to be in many cases. It took a pretty long time to watch 5 Dragic buckets from last night. And if your internet is not the fastest ever, NBA dot com always takes forever to load. The quality is good, though. I'd say there is still a place for indiv. player highlights and I will still be searching youtube for these instead of watching a clip at a time. That said I'm hyped about this new tool as it will be awesome for certain times.

Thank you for that comment, I really appreciate it. I suppose one single highlight video is often easier to watch, and YouTube is a more user-friendly than NBA.com. I guess you've convinced me to continue with this videos.

However, I'm not sure my schedule will allow me to post videos for every game. I'll see what I can do though.
