Can we stop using this metaphor for sports?

Can we stop quoting the last line of a great post?

With Beal out its a Perfect time to give Maynor and Wall some run together. Get Rice some time next game and Temple run the second unit  Bench might suck more O well.

Not really a metaphor, it was reductio ad absurdum (or at least an attempt to keep my ridiculous, sarcastic post going), and I just included it for rhetorical flourish. It was meant to be comically over the top, but i didnt mean to offend anyone by it. If the mods deem it offensive, please remove it or notify me that you want it removed.

That line had me in stitches, I enjoyed your sarcastic post.

Just got back from the game, what a thriller. LA was hot from all over it seemed and the wiz were matching the pace. Aside from the two pitiful shots at the end of the half, Wall's jumper looked amazing. He also missed a couple layups he usually makes which could have easily pushed him to 40 points.

Lots of Lakers fans in the phone booth which was disgusting. I think it was 50/50 as far as numbers go, but I also feel like Wiz fans don't get loud until the last five minutes of the game. Overall a fun fun time. Nick Young bricking that last shot was a perfect end to the Lakers hopes and dreams. :D

Thanks man. Definitely wasn't my intention to make light of a serious issue like spousal abuse, I was just being satirical. I just really hate the fact that DC fans get crushed routinely for not supporting abject, persistent awfulness, but people turn a blind eye to the fact that the 76ers attendance has been a joke for years, Lakers fans took over the Garden years ago when Thomas ran the club and the Knicks were irrelevant, Mets fans used to invade Phillies home games when they stunk, the Penguins had terrible attendance years and were thinking about moving twice before stumbling into franchise players, the Dodgers fans stopped going to games when McCourt owned the team, Blackhawks fans did the same when they had their dog years etc etc. But we self-flagellate at the drop of a hat, without taking a moment to recognize the sheer ineptitude that bred this apathy or in some cases antipathy for this team in a for profit business. As soon as we're given competent teams, we give very solid support in every single sport we have (and we have them all), but the mindset that we're wrong for not protecting the building of a franchise that has the track record that this one has in the face of a globally popular, iconic franchise that's won in every decade since the 60's, often multiple times in succession is ludicrous to me. Lakers fans are everywhere, so are Bulls, Celtics and Knicks fans. Those teams with the exception of the Knicks have given their fans reason to come out and support their organization no matter where they are, and if tickets are available, they'll likely snap them up. The way the Wizards combat this is by giving their fans a reason to want to procure those tickets. The fact that they haven't done it doesn't reflect poorly on us, it reflects poorly on them. Period.

With that said, I was at the game today and did my part to give vocal support to the club. If anyone should be irrationally offended by what transpired it should be people like me. The players get paid to play here, it's their job to do so. The owner paid into a capitalistic enterprise. I pay money to be entertained and essentially because of civic and regional pride. I have the most legitimate claim to some sort of indignity, however tenuous, and I'm not the least bit ashamed of the city/area. This isn't a scenario where we have a consistently winning team that doesn't draw. We're the dregs. We have been for multiple, successive decades. We're just beginning to show signs of life. When my fellow fans feel like this organization has done enough to deserve their money, I expect them to come out in droves. Until then, continue supporting the team in the way I know that innumerable fans do when they are subjected to this level of constant incompetence, vigilantly from a distance. I'm not mad at you and I know that you guys don't suck.

Funny you mention that, because that was a perfect example of why I dislike Wall. There is no basketball coach in America that wouldn't tell players "ALWAYS pass ahead to a guy in the open court" and for a PG to "reward your big man who runs the floor." Wall preferred to showboat and keep the points.

Probably meangingless in the big picture, but I didn't like it.

That's got to be frustrating as hell for a player.

I can understand when the fans cheer for Kobe or Lebron or other superstars, that's the nature of this league. It encourages allegiance to players more so than teams. But I just don't understand why DC fans were cheering for the Lakers tonight. That wasn't the Lakers. That was a broken down Pau Gasol and a bunch of journeymen wearing purple and gold.

The reality is that DC has bad basketball fans. Look no further than booing Nick Young. DC fans still boo Juwan Howard. Why? Because Bullets management was stupid enough to match a huge contract offer to him? Is Nick Young at fault for being a mediocre NBA player? It's just the flip side of cheering for the Lakers.

I know right? It's complete bull that fans aren't selling out every game at the Verizon Center to see a team that hasn't won 50 games since since 78-79! What crappy fans. Shame on you DC for not continually supporting perhaps the worst franchise in the sport through mind-boggling, persistent stupidity. I mean, what the hell gives man? You're acting like the owner of the team had a fiduciary responsibility to field a reasonably competent team to justify your purchase. Can't you guys see that they've won four out of the last five? Never mind the fact that they're still under .500 and haven't actually proven anything even this year! You guys suck! You sold out the game against the Niners and watched your team get trashed in 30 degree weather, but so what, it's your obligation to fill the arena of the man that still employs EG!!! Do it or feel worse about yourselves because that's the way this works, nothing perverse about it at all. I bid you adieu. I'm off to blame victims of spousal abuse that had the courage to leave their relationships for contributing to the rise in single parent households.

Go see a Golden State Warriors game. That franchise has been miserable for a long time but has perhaps the best fans in the NBA. Get these strawmen arguments out of here.

I dont mind that but alot of fans just like those teams just because they are the "it" team. Stop being followers

I totally understand your point about loyalty. However, some people just want to be associated with a winner.

It's too bad the Bullets / Wizards have not been able to capitalize on this revolving fan base. There is lots of money being left on the table.

Build a winner and they will come. Until then, expect fans like last night.

One of the best things about Nick being gone is not having to watch his mediocre fadeaway jumper.

Winning will solve the issue of "away games" at Verizon Center. The Caps used to have a terrible problem with many more opposing fans. However success(primarily regular season) has changed the general make-up of the crowd.

Nice gut-check win last night. I think Milwaukee is damn-near a must-win. With Indiana coming up on Friday and then a tough Atlanta team at home on Saturday, we could lose 3 straight if we don't win this game.

As for the bench, they don't have to score 50 points (though double digits would be nice). They have to give you serviceable minutes so we don't run injury-prone players like Webster into the ground. It would be nice if Witt has some faith to play Rice 10 minutes a game. He has a little Nick Young in him (not as a good of a shooter), which can be a good thing off the bench. He's an athlete and when you have guys like Maynor and Temple who look ground bound with no speed, it's not a bad thing to get some young legs in there (as Phil said last night).

On the bright side of the Beal injury, if Porter can return at the same time Beal is back, you can distribute those minutes more evenly and play guys at the 2 and 3 spots 25-30mpg instead of 35-40mpg. And Temple would only get minutes at the backup 1.

I am well aware of the definition of a strawman argument, and I don't see any ironic use of it above. I'm not referring to last season, when the Warriors got great new ownership, but rather the past 20 years when they were not much better then the Wizards and Clippers. Yes, Oracle Arena still rocked even when the team stunk.

no time to read the whole thread now..got a car that I need to attend to
but I will say this, I think we are at the point (again) of a dominant Wall
which will often mean that the Wizards will be the team with the best
individual player in a lot of games. And that's a nice place to be.
Not that many teams have a player who is better than Wall.
B2B2B 30 point games. Yeah boy howdy.

Laker fans suck. That said, the guy sitting next to me, also a season tix
holder and a Wizard fan had a Magic Johnson #32 jersey on last night. I cut him
some slack on that since Magic was one of my all-time fav players. And
I know he is a Wizards fan. Now if he had been wearing a Kobe jersey...
