That's their problem, really. It still counts.
Nobody lets other clubs off if they lose to lesser teams cause they didn't play their best.

Again, watching that match, it didn't seem like nobody cared. It seemed more like they were each dying to win it.
Have you seen last years 1-1 draw in Dortmund at the end of the season? Even in a friendly game these two teams would go at each other. Doesnt take away that its meaningless Cup and you cant take the first regular game of the season as a measurement.
why not? I mean, if the Arsenal "invincibles" lost the first game of the season and then won every other game, they wouldn't have an undefeated season and therefor would not be the invincibles

You know what it doesn't take away? The score.
While this conversation now has me worried about teams whose first matches of the season are league matches and the various controversies that could ensue, let's first cut out the measurement straw man. Having said that, they played an official match, they tried their butts off, they lost, and it counts as a perfectly legitimate loss. That's all there's to it.

It still counts, but there's a difference between beating bayern when they're playing to win, and beating Bayern when they're playing to concede less than 3. You picking up what I'm putting down?

Bayern did not try their butts of in the second leg against arsenal. The were absolutely just going through the motions, especially with how easily they dominated possession.

A Bayern loss only counts if it's an official match in the middle of the season, and they try their hardest, and they play their best.
Then again, Bayern wouldn't lose if they played their best so if they've been beaten it's safe to say they haven't played their best. Thus, ergo, in conclusion, Bayern can't officially be beaten.

That's the difference between losing the match and losing the tie. Not the difference between losing the match and losing the match.

I mean sure Arsenal won that match, but they didn't stop Bayern from accomplishing their goals on that day, so Bayern didn't fail there despite losing. That's why that loss is different in my eyes than the loss to BATE in the group stages or Leverkusen in the league. It's cool though Gladbach will pick them off at home in the new year!
EDIT: Do mean the Supercup? That's an exhibitional preseason tournament, not an official match.

Oh wow that changes everything then!
Yeah no, I was being very facetious when I brought it up, it's like Germany's community shield.

Re: 2013
I'll miss todays matches because of work. SMDH.
Leverkusen will be doing Leverkusen things and screw up in San Sebastian although ManU at least draws Shaktar at home.
Bayern will do Bayern things and comfortably beat City at home.
Drogba will beat Juve with a 95th minute header.
Mitroglu will score a hattrick for Olympiakos to advance.

Leverkusen will draw sociedad but still get through on a stoppage time game winner from united.

Re: 2013
Pellegrini was more interested in Arsenal in the pre match presser yesterday. LOL! They've already qualified. The bigger game is v the Gooners. Meanwhile Bayern are trying to get maximum points from the group stage for the first time in their history. It's going to be a whitewash.
United v Shakhtar is the game to watch. Expect United to bounce back and get all three points.
