Tough loss, but luckily we don't have to face a backcourt like Blake and Meeks every night.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Lol. I think that sentence can be reused over and over again for this whole season, someone bet me. As long as our PnR defense continues to be turrible, games are always going to be frustrating like this.ElectricMayhem wrote:Tough loss, but luckily we don't have to face a backcourt like Blake and Meeks every night.

Wow, I didn't even know we can quote vines like that, neat. Also at the same time, what's not neat is the atrocious D there. Hawks fans always said Josh had low BBIQ, but I thought they were overblowing it. It's starting to slowly reveal itself, no?scrop32 wrote:gusman wrote:DetroitPistons wrote:Johnson: 6-7 from 3 (Smith's man)

EDIT: Wait, they ran that exact same play last year, except it was Kobe passing the ball for the oop jam. Wow, really? D'Antoni just outcoached Cheeks right there.

Don't be an idiot and I already commented on that play....ya know, when it happened.
D'Antoni is a offensive genius, the best part of that entire play isn't even caught on the vine. It happened before the play, the constant movement (distraction) from Young and Meeks which caught Smith. Should it happen? No. But sometimes, you just have to say great play and move on....that was a genius play.

Re: Game 16. (6-9) vs. L.A. Lakers (8-8). 7:30PM ET.
Josh Smith 4-17, why is he constantly shooting the ball. He had an awesome rebounding game from but he was so deficient as a defender and a scorer. He's not fitting in here and TBH- we'd be better off without him. Josh kept shooting the ball despite being ice cold in the 4th and Greg- a guy who was dominating Gasol all night long, didn't get a single shot attempt. There is something very wrong that.
Why did Joe D sign him? Yes, he's talented but he's such a terrible offensive player it practically negates every good thing he does. We have 3 starters shooting under 40% from the field on a combined 37 FGA per game- this is what is killing us. I'll give KCP a pass since he's going throw rookie pains, but Jennings and Smith?
No, these guys were our 2 big acquisitions- they need to get it together. Jennings had a solid game, he made some big shots tonight but he needs to improve on his shooting for the rest of the season. Smith had another terrible offensive game.
We also need better production from our wings off the bench. We need to turn Singler/Jerebko/Datome into a real NBA caliber SF because we aren't good enough to have a wing rotation filled with nonplayers.

If you're distracted by Jodie Meeks and Farmar square dancing 35 feet away from you enough to give up a back cut and wide open dunk, then that says alot about your awareness. Why are you giving a pass on stupid plays?
You mind telling me WTF was he doing when Nick Young was dribbling himself into a bad shot on the baseline and he's sagging off his man all the way on the other side and gives up the 3 to tie the game?

Detroit's P&R defense is laughable. They're ranked 21st in defending the ball handler, and dead last in defending the screener. Detroit's bigs hardly hedge screens, and the guards don't try to "ice" the ball handler often enough.
Elsewhere, they're 25th in defending possessions stemming from offensive rebounds, last in defending off ball screens. 29th in defending isolations as well.
Detroit's greatest weakness is the P&R defense. Teams run a P&R 30% of the time on average and Detroit can't do a thing about it right now. Cheeks should probably run a 2-3 zone and call it a season at this rate. I don't understand what's so difficult about instilling a defensive philosophy. Don't allow the middle for penetration. That's mostly it.

Hilariously, he's probably our most valuable asset at this point.

What's his excuse for airballing the layup right next to the basket? He's 6'11....airballing layups is unacceptable but yet it happens way too often.
If you're seriously going to compare airballing a 20 footer and a 1 footer, I have no words for you.
he leads the league in field goal percentage, not sure what more you want from him. he's not allowed to shoot 50% in a game?
even LeBron misses layups.

Combination of getting outcoached by D'Antoni and Smith's infamous BBIQ.DetroitSho wrote:DTP wrote:Don't be an idiot and I already commented on that play....ya know, when it happened.

This is what I pointed out as well. Their PnR defense is not only bad from the eyetest, but statistically they're horrible.E-Z wrote:Detroit's P&R defense is laughable. Any teams with a semblance of good PnR offense is going to destroy this team inside and out. There is no philosophy of ICEing the PnR and no hard hedges to help the on-ball defender and to disrupt the plays.

I believe it's fair to say Cheeks isn't the man for the job here. 15+ games into the season and Detroit can't defend the most common play in basketball? Not due to a lack of skill or ability, but due to clueless players on the court.
I've seen Monroe and Drummond hang back in the paint allowing the ball-handler to beat his man off the screen. From there, the offense has too many options as Detroit's defense has collapsed. Sometimes I wonder if Detroit's players are even communicating when a screen is set.

Re: Game 16. (6-9) vs. L.A. Lakers (8-8). 7:30PM ET.
Being at the game was incredibly depressing. Up 10 in the forth quarter I turn to my friend and ask him, "Why do I still feel like we're going to lose this game?" I was right, unfortunately. For whatever reason, Smith cannot be bothered to not sink into the paint and leave his 3 point shooter wide open all god damned night.
